ATM jobs (but not ATCO positions) - where to look, esp. Asia?
 

Hi, I'm currently working for an ANSP in Europe as an analyst (research into current and future operations rather than a financial analyst) and I'm keenly searching for opportunities in this area to further my career.
I seem to be able to find lots of vacancies advertised for ATCO's but I'm a bit lost at searching for analysts in ATM {as though I'm looking in the wrong places, but maybe that's just the market}.
Has anyone got any suggestions on where's good to do some job hunting for this line of work?
I'm based in the UK but keen to head over to Asia (Singapore or Japan) if possible, making my search all the harder. I've got JobsDB, FlightInternational, ATCEvents, and a few companies' websites, e.g. AirServicesAustralia (although not quite Asia...).

There seem to be lots of general recruiters but few that specialise in aviation (let alone ATM). Can anyone give me a few tips on places to look? Unfortunately I know no-one in the industry in this part of the world.

Hi, It depends upon what skills you have and what areas you wish to specialise in. ATM is becoming more and more specialised and I'm not sure what you do as an ATM analyst. But the areas where ATM needs specialists are e.g. Future ATC equipment design, STCD - short term conflict detection, MTCD - medium term conflict detection, airspace design and optimisation. Some of these areas require a knowledge of fast-time simulation. This involves a great deal of analysis from input to interpretation of the results. Have a look here for an indication of what areas are involved in just one of those areas - airspace and airport design and optimisation :-

Whilst this is not the only equipment on the market it should give you an idea as to the way that the industry is going.

Future ATC equipment design is basically concerned with developing equipment which allows the controller to handle more traffic than a single human being is capable of controlling. This might sound like an oxymoron, but it is basically equipment that monitors all traffic and alerts the controller to only those situations that require human intervention i.e the computer either cannot resolve the problem or there are conflicting solutions.

If you are unsure as to the area/s that you wish to pursue then you need to visit ATC centres, flow control units, equipment designers, airspace modellers, airport construction companies, airlines. The list is endless.

This is by no means a comprehensive list of the job opportunities that are available, but I hope it gives you a flavour of the areas that I personally think are the future areas that deserve keen young people to develop.

If you can get to Amsterdam I think you will be blown away by the equipment and future technnologies that are on display there.

As to working in Asia, I think you will find that the jobs that get you to Asia are those where you are working for an American, Australian or European company.

thank you for your speedy reply - much quicker than mine!
I was trying to be a bit non-specific in case my current employer sees my post and identifies me.
Your reply is quite encouraging as I'm currently involved in airspace resectorisations using fast time simulation and I can see how continuing to develop in this line of work will be beneficial in the long run. The trouble I'm having at the moment is where to look to take those skills.
Most of the work remains Euro-centric whilst I'm keen to get a posting over to Asia.

I shall take your advice though and direct attention towards companies that have or I think will have the potential to sell their skills to Asia.

As an aside, ironically I'm registered for ATC Global, but can't get the time off work :ugh:

Canso launched an online ATM jobs board last year. Maybe a good place to look. They do have a Fast Time Simulation position on there at the moment.

There is an opening in Dubai for an operational analyst. Fast-time simulation experience would be useful. The job is on the CANSO web-site via Real Time Consultants.
