Hi 094, be prepared for a good number of varying responses to this post. each station is different, but from my knowledge, I'll try and help out as best and objectively as I can...

Depending on where you work, the conditions will vary a bit. The trend however, is that as a result of staff leaving, the shortages mean that the remainder of the controllers need to pick up the slack. Depending again on the position you work, be prepared to work combined sectors and to be called out occasionally on your off day due staff booking off sick etc. Can't make too much comment on hours on duty, but at the station where I was, it was 6-8 hour shifts.

As far as the overall staffing situation. SA is very short staffed. Daily, controllers in Johannesburg are working combined sectors, and with even more leaving for greener/sandier pastures, it may get worse before it gets better.

Pay structure is based on experience and depending on where you're stationed, the station allowance varies considerably. I'm afraid I don't have the latest pay structures for posting...

As for anything else: You'll hear a lot of people discussing safety, rent, travelling and the likes. Safety can be an issue if you're not careful, but you'll soon learn the dos and don'ts:ouch:. If you do a search for South Africa on PPrune, you're bound to come up with a good few answers.

Other than that, they'd love to have you... The more the merrier:)

There is a big shortage of ACC atc's at FAJS so if you happy to go and work in JHB as an ACC controller you will have no problem.Working conditions...not bad if you take the amount of ATC'S in the pool.8 days off in a 28 day cycle, of which one weekend is off the rest of the off days are mostly in the week. Most of your shifts are 6 hours with about an hour and a half break, mostly broken up in 30min breaks. You have DSTV and internet in the restroom,if you are lucky to get to one of the 2 comp's.

I wont say much about the nightshifts.....if they are legal or not is another question.

You get paid depending on years of experience,so that will very from 30k to 60k.You will take home after pension, pvt medical aid, income tax etc etc from 21k - 33k.I have included the retention scheme allowance as well. The amount will very alot!!

All in all not a bad place to work if you happy to live in JHB or Pretoria.

Thats my opion, wating to get shot down in flames.......

Another just had the farewell party just a few days ago, an there is more to come. B prepared to work sectors combined, min breaks,a people hungry system were "they" have taken ur 2nd pair of eyes away, Rvsm chomma plans that has no staff to work it,technicians that instead of keeping the radios working are more worried bout ur "telephone allowance" being over used!, internet that doesnt work on weekends, sumtimes! No real logistical or tactical plans for 2010 cup, college that is battling to get students to pass aerodrome crse, canteen that is closed on weekend, security that treats u like a criminal even though they see every single day, half a performance bonus even though u put in a 100%, coffee that runs out sumtimes on the weekend, other than these "few" issues, they (jhb) are the greatest bunch of atcs an atsas 2 work with, just ask chommma , but just do it on a monday, but as we say it maaaaandag!

Dear ORANPO, I want you to think of me as Dr Phil. Please give me the opportunity to dissect your last post and then give you my unwanted opinion!!

“A few extra validations at acc, too little too late! They still gona jump boat to the land of sand and HSBC! Moral is low,”

I do believe that those words have been used in previous threads over the years, all of which describing the imminent fall of ATNS and all that is ATC in South Africa. Well it won’t happen…….The people that remain in SA will keep doing the job as best they can (with or without the required staff) and the higher management will do nothing about the problem, because as far as they are concerned…….If airlines don’t complain, THERE IS NO PROBLEM!!!

“RVSM starts 25 sep , an what a brilliant time to implement it, smack bang in WX season, no real paperwork/structured procedures in place, its a real circus!”

Seriously, what are you complaining about? RVSM gives you more levels to work with, which will make your life so much easier during the weather season. What procedures or paperwork do you need? EVEN and ODD!!!

Fear is that little darkroom where negatives are developed.Michael Pritchard

“But alas an esteemed "vip" at isando busy in "Ballito" with his plot! But maaandag chommma will make it better with those kung fu hand movements!”

WHAT???!??? I hope for your sake that maaandag chommma doesn’t find out who you are, otherwise you might experience one of his kung fu hand movements.

“Also there are still 2 pools that still work 3 HOUR STRAIGHT WITHOUT BREAKS! But then again, we are the C Team!”

RVSM is not the problem...Being done all over the world without any problems.;)

BUT being limited to 5 or 10 minutes on departure for all traffic to Johannesburg (ORT) on a daily basis are the BIG PROBLEM.
Other stations feeding ORT are also very busy and loading them by applying such restriction is unfair practice. Lots of extra planning required, delaying traffic and snotty remarks to be absorbed by GMC controllers are daily practice to accommodate such delays.

Please ATNS...make a plan and sort out your staffing problems!!!:D I believe there are a lot of ATC's planning(with contracts being signed) to leave in the months to come????

Stop staff from leaving...training new staff has NEVER being the answer to solve the problem in the history of any country!!!:=
