Hi Hangten - At Gatwick we're not approved by the CAA specifically to verify mode C, only to validate correct code selected. And I checked with MOAT this morning!:O

Passing Alt...

almost professional

I think it's my fault for asking the wrong question... It should be, why at EMA do we check the altitude whereas I can't recall it ever happening at say Doncaster or Manchester?

PS Away on leave till early Aug but if you don't mind I'll take you up on your offer on my return

ex-rotaree-which unit does it will depend on equipment/controller licensing local orders etc-at some units the Approach controller always works the outbounds so he will do it, whereas on 27 ours very rarely do
no problem with the visit-just ring the ATC supervisors desk and they will be happy to arrange something or PM me and will help, I am away mid August-thank heavens!

ex-rotaree......as nobody else has said....

ATM: Aerodrome Traffic Monitor. Effectively it's an air radar screen in the visual control room that's used by the Tower ATCO, but only for limited, specified uses.

The Tower ATCO might not have a radar rating, so it cannot be used as a surveillance radar to provide Approach Radar services.

Some of the uses might be:
  • Determine landing order, distance from touchdown and spacing of arriving aircraft
  • To aid in establishing separation in the event of a missed approach
  • Identify, validate and verify SSR.
  • Assist in taking initial corrective action if the final approach spacing becomes less than the required minimum.
....etc etc.

Ah. In the US, a BRITE. "Bright Radar Indicating Tower Equipment." ATM means something else... :)

In Australia, TSAD (Tower Situational Air Display).

BBC NEWS | Business | Clearance to land

Cut to 20 seconds in, thats the ATM (Despite the controller saying "Look at this surface radar" - They cut to an image of the wrong one)

At Liverpool, it happens routinely because the Tower controller is responsible (as per local unit instructions) for verifying the Mode C readout, rather than Approach.

Nothing, really. Just updated equipment, eg daylight viewing screens(colour telly).

vespasia - PMs...
Are you implying vespasia is moody? ;)

I was going to say exactly what they said about the Mode C verification... I've always been told that it is not agreed at LGW - it is the only one on the list that we don't have for some reason.
