Definition of SOUL
In US ,when ATC ask pilot "say how many souls on board" ,what does it mean ? Is flight crew included also ? Is it mean passenger on board or people on board ?
|
The definition of a soul?
Being able to express ur views WITHOUT reversion to censorship or 'book burning'.!!!
SOB (souls on board) can also be POB (persons on board), according to ur view of life...or death! I personally use SOB. WHODOUDO |
"How many people are there in TOTAL on board your aeroplane?" The exact number of pax or crew is, generally, of no interest to ATC.
|
No intersest to ATC...
ATC are the first to be asked about POB/SOB. Apart from some mods, one on of the most ignorant statatments I have read d on PPruNe.
Mods get STUCK IN! WHODOUDO |
<<ATC are the first to be asked about POB/SOB. >>
Really? I must have missed a lot during my 36+ years in the job.... I certainly asked a good few a/c for SOB, but never recall that info being requested by anyone. |
So...after an "Aicraft Accident" the said a/c is on fire. IF you know the total POBs and they are all accounted for. Then you do NOT have several firemen entering a burning a/c and risking their lives for nothing. If the POBs come up short...then the firemen still risk their lives but this time with a purpose...ie rescueing them thats trapped ont' plane

Whenever I 'book out'...
I ask SOB. A record is made of this, and ATC become a SERIOUS port of call come 'bedlam'.
'nuff said. F that mod. WHODOUDO |
I remember once somebody telling me that the difference between souls (SOB) and persons (POB) was that the former included any 'souls' ie living and dead! and the latter only the living.
the reason being that there was a crash of a mil transport carrying 10 POB, and when the rescue crews went into evacuate those onboard there were 3 crew and 7 coffins :sad:. I believe that this is the reason there is now a distinction between the terms. |

Perhaps maybe my england is very small please excuse. I am mean ATC not need know what many passenger in back or what many crew there is being at end of front of plane. ATC is knowing to want what is exact number of all people on aeroplane! Thank you please.

Don't Ryanair crews have to give their souls to the company when they sign on the dotted line ? :E :eek:
|
When I give SOB/POB it includes whether alive or dead, passengers or crew. The only thing the emergency services need to know is the total amount to facilitate a count
|
Sometimes you get the reply ( no of souls) + number of infants eg "10 plus one" .I never understood why babies never had souls, it was probably there to help the rescue services search for them. :sad:

Personally - I only ever refer to POB. Souls on board is just another gash ambiguous Americanism!:ugh:
CAP 694 ITEM 19: SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION NOTE: This information is not normally included in transmission of flight plan message. It is retained, however, at location of the filing of the FPL. ENDURANCE: After E/ INSERT a 4-figure group giving the fuel endurance in hours and minutes. PERSONS ON BOARD: After P/ INSERT the total number of persons (passengers and crew) on board, when required by the appropriate ATS authority. INSERT "TBN" (to be notified) if the total number of persons is not known at the time of filing. Just my two peneth. Wait a minute, cars pulled up........****, the phraseology police....:eek: |
Quote ATCO Fred: "Wait a minute"
Standby, surely...? :} |
Bugger- I'm guilty then!:{
|
Reminds me of when a C150 crashed in to a Dublin cemetary. The rescuers found 89 bodies and thought it may have been overloaded:}
Sorry, I'll get my hat... |
It's the total persons on board minus anyone from middle management up
|
So...after an "Aicraft Accident" the said a/c is on fire. IF you know the total POBs and they are all accounted for. Pob / SoB is largely irrelevant to Airport Fire and Rescue, because unless the number is very low, you aint gonna find, and then count, everybody before a decision is made to enter the burning fuselage. Remember you've only got some 180 seconds or so before the cabin becomes non survivable. AFFRS will attempt to get in there ASAP to check noone has been left behind. BEX |
(I'm just a SLF and will go back to lurking, but this one was too tempting)
I'd say that some of the behaviour I've seen from people onbaord tells me there is a significant discrepancy between POB on SOB in C and especially F class... -A |
