Airfield names!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Next time airfield manager wishes to change name of airfield (which has not moved location) please encourage them not too.............
Just replaced complete EGNX plates with......EGNX plates for the sake of reverting back to name which existed blah blah Don't get me started on Doncaster Sheffield Robin Hood Uncle Tom International :* I blame Bill Gates for making it possible for anyone to cut 'n' paste!!!! |
It started when they changed London Airport to Heathrow and has gone further down the tubes ever since..
|
Don't like the renaming of Doncaster airport, then try Teeside, or Barton.
Could have sworn SRG had rattled their sabres about this 're-branding' of certain airfields. Wonder whose going to blink first... |
PKPF68-77:
Glasgow Prestwick? Sounds like a con to me. NS |
In the case of Teesside (sic), not many people could even spell it!
|
London/Sarfend was the one that always made me laugh.
|
not forgetting "london ashford"!!
Lydd is closer to calais than london?! |
"George Best Belfast Docklands" or whatever it is.
"John Lennon Gizza Job" What next, "Shearer Keegan Intergalactic"? |
"Glasgow Prestwick International Airport" is a perfectly reasonable description of what's inside the can. Just be thankful it's not Glasgow Elaine C. Smith International or something. Oh wait a minute, it pretty much is. Pure Dead Ill-Conceived. |
Who is Elaine C. Smith?
|
Didn't Ryanair or similar get into serious trouble for advertising a flight to "London/Prestwick"?
You can imagine the poor sods' faces when they walk out of the airport to get their quick hop transport to the London city centre! |
Elaine C. Smith Perfect training for anyone relocating from MACC :E:E |

Hang on in there, it still could revert to Castle Donington ;-)
Myself, i could never understand why plates are not standardised IATA or ICAO. The chaps that use then in anger know the codes, either or would be fine. How an airport chooses to market itself to the SLF is it's own affair. EGNX will at some point consider London North or Manchester South, depends what the LoCos want to achieve. I'm not bitter, just could not find many an airport in Jepps (in particular) due to the tendency to use airport name. Now, is 'Freddy Eastwood International' Southend, Halfpenny Green or Cardiff? |
I had the extreme pleasure of working with the former Chief Pilot of Air America and as the stories came out he mentioned that he had named a Laos landing strip after his wife.
I asked of P***, why did you name it after your wife, and in his best southern American drawl came the reply 'Cos it was a son of a bitch to get down on' :) God rest P***'s soul, one of life's characters, sadly passed away in 1998. |
EHBK = Beek, then Maastricht Airport, then Maastricht Aachen Airport and now heard Euroregional International mentioned (no hoper that one)
|
the same issue different problem
LWSK- The main international airport in Republic of Macedonia(also known as FYROM) In the past it was Petrovec, then Skoplje intl and now: ALEXANDER THE GREAT No problem at first glimpse. Unless you are Greek!:= Best regards for Macedonian ATCOs |
Hang on in there, it still could revert to Castle Donington ;-) The one that makes me laugh is "Netherthorpe International", as I've heard it unofficially called on the radio. :ok: For the benefit of those who don't know it, it's the shortest licensed airfield in UK - on grass, no lights, A/G only. :p |
Some years ago I had the pleasure of working with a particular controller who, whenever he issued an airways clearance, would refer to the destination by its subsidiary name, as a matter of principle. It would often confuse the pilots of course. i.e. "cleared to Middle St George, via...FL...squawk...
However it was quite interesting to realise how many airfields have at least two names, sometimes more. e.g. Cardiff-Glamorgan-Rhoose, etc. Would anyone care to start a register? Edinburgh – Turnhouse East Midlands - Castle Donnington Swansea – Fairwood Common Bristol – Filton Bristol – Lulsgate etc |
