I didn't kown that their tails lost the "S"! Now I know that there's a "B": but "Brussels Airlines" is really unpronunciable on frequency! "Estail" was a really nice callsign. Way not "B"Tail?
Like when EEZ changed from "GeeJay" to "E-Fly". Why easy and nice callsign always change? :hmm:

As ATCO you can always make them assume a new callsign, and personnaly I quite like "B-tail"...short and easy to pronounce! :)

Amongst Brussels air traffic controllers there is a big discussion about this new callsign. We have Brussels city, Brussels VOR, Brussels Airport (and even Brussels South, thank you Ryanair!) and of course Brussels tower, approach, control, information, ...

We tend to use a lot of 'Brussels' in our transmissions these days...

Anyway, a lot of controllers over here are refusing to use the new callsign and simply say 'Delta-Alfa-Tango' because 'Brussels Airlines' is too long, and can cause confusion...

Some pilots are also abreviating their callsign (eg. Brusselair, Brussel***lines, ...) and others get angry when they keep being called by their 3-letter code iso 'Brussels Airlines', or even refuse to make their readbacks (untill you instruct them to enter the holding or carry out RTF procedures, that is...)

Now I heard some controllers in the UK and Rhein are using 'Delta-Alfa-Tango' as well. Could anyone confirm this?

Our guild has made a few reports and contacted Brussels Airlines OPS and asked them to change their callsign.

Let's hope we'll get something more usable in the next few days...

I didn't know that Brussels lost the "S" beacuse I work in a radar center that is not located in the airport (but in a spa town about 40km away from the nearest :ok:)!
Searching about new Brussels Airlines callsign on the net, I found also other forum complaining a lot about it.
I couldn't imagine that the problem was so diffused... and never thought about Brussels Airlines, VOR (that means SID-STAR I suppose!), Units ecc!

I also found this old post (of Dec 2006) in the ATC Humor thread:

A couple of weeks ago.
As DAT and VEX merged into Brussels Airlines we were woundering wat de new callsign would be. Their new livery has a big B in dots on the tail. And DAT is now known as S-tail (big S on their tail).
Anyway I asked an S-tail pilot if I had to call him B-tail from now on forward. He liked it a continued calling himself B-tail123. His colleague still went on with S-tail as he didn't have the new livery yet. A third S-tail pilot followed all before and called in with SMARTIES456.
Must say chearful pilots.
So the callsign "Brussels Airlines" is a recent problem, but they were wondering about a new one since december 2006!!:ugh:
Someone else already thought about B-Tail one year before of the problem! Also "Smarties" is easy and would be nice!
I've tried to call them "Brux" or "D-A-T"... but pilot wasn't so happy about it!

Even the Ops dept at Flymaybe haven't managed to cock up their R/T callsign despite the numerous rebrandings of the last decade. Well done to them for not falling into the trap.

As for SN/DAT, well, what can I say. I heard one of our guys (it may or may not have been me;)) continue to call them S-tail last week. Pilots didn't seem to worried and read back all their instructions (to the best of my knowledge;)).

Personally, I like Sprout, well said 40612!

Maybe back to Sabena or whatever, but this Brussels airlines is WAY too long... I personally call them Brussels most of the time, but still Estail was much better... I like the Btail idea as well :)

Granted they inherited it, but: "Jersey XXX, route direct Jersey, contact Jersey XXX.X" :} At least it doesn't happen too often.

As for DAT, our strips still say Estail so the pilots still get called incorrectly occasionally (by those who haven't read their notices ;)) and generally the pilots get on with it, politely pointing out they're now Brussels. I guess out of sight, out of mind - I'd never considered the Brussels confusion.

P.S. I thought the new Brussels were called (JAI) Jet Airlines!!:};)

Today, I had some busy traffic, and the daily DAT-flights in between them.I decided to tell them to "adopt callsign B-tail" : the first one said he prefered S-tail.... fair enough, it was a RJ1H witht the old livery :). The next one replied with " you have to discuss this with the boss " :uhoh:

So, he was called Delta Alfa Tango for the remaining period :E

PS : I should check up on the rules on when you can instruct a flight to adopt a callsign... I was suprised that he "refused".

Moral of the story : I think Brussels Airlines is way to long, and doesn't pronounce easily... I vote for B-tail, or back to S-tail...but not this... sigh.

A colleague that works in a tower told me that also Blue Line (BLI) has a "B" on his tail. This could be the reason of why they didn't choose B-Tail as new callsign.
It's full of nice and easy callsign (for example Franky, Ghibli, Relax, Expo, Seagull, Jetset, Stardust and many others) and, considering that for us is not necessary to recognise the company, if the operator has a long or a difficult name or similar to another one it could be easily changed.

Good news! A fax just came in from ICAO with the new callsign for DAT:

"Brussels Airlines" will be cancelled and replaced by "BEE-LINE"...

I am thinking of your new cargo-airline which is calling "CARGO-BEE" ;-)
