Scampton To Lose Airspace?

There was a meeting at Sherburn last week, Run by a team of ATCO'S, from various Airports.

It was said that with DSH acquiring it's own Airspace, Scampton would lose some of it's Airspace to DSH?

It was said that DSH will acquire the Netherthorpe, Gamston, Sandtoft areas as well.

Regards.

The only reason Scampton may lose it's "airspace" ie the ridiculously placed Restricted area for the Red Arrows, is if the Red's are moving.

I am a big supporter of the Reds, but Scampton is the wrong place for them to be based and to train.
Scampton exists solely for the Reds, its a huge base and nothing else happens there, it costs a fekin fortune to run, just for the Reds.

Move them to a joint base where they still have the freedom to practice and do what they do, the Highlands of Scotland, Spain, Poland or Cornwall would be better.

But stuck in one of the busiest pieces of FIR used by considerable amounts of G/A, Commercial and other Military traffic, all of whom have to avoid an area which is very poorly utilised? no... move them and do t quickly..

Move 'em to St Mawgan I say. No only joking, but Scampton has now taken over the CRC role from Boulmer so I've been told, so something else does go on there albiet not a flying unit.

True, but that's 30m underground, the airfield could become an industrial estate and that commitment would not be affected.

My understanding is that if the MOD give up Scampton then they have to give it back in the condition they received it, i.e. they would have to fund the re-straightening of the A15

There is absolutely no guarantee that DSH will get CAS. Even if they do, there are many questions that need asking about why they need so much. The DSH plan is on their website I think, don't remember it impacting on Scampton.

True, but if questions were asked and deep probing was done, I would wager that the Reds would have a very hard time justifying the airspace and facilities they command at Scampton - it could all be easily shared at another base elsewhere.

DSH will need CAS of some kind, what they get very much depends on how they present their case.

In this particular instance there's no doubt that the military who use the FIR in Lincolnshire and Sth Yorks will be closely monitoring what goes on - if it's a case the removal of the Restricted area at Scampton and establishment of CAS at DSH, they'll support the latter.

Excuse Me....I am interested in this thread as a GA flyer in Yorkshire....but what is DSH? Assume something to do with proposed CAS?

The proposed CAS for Robin Hood Doncaster Sheffield (RHADS) is here:

http://www.robinhoodairport.com/show...hp?file_id=333

There is a CTA over D313, but it is base FL125, wheras I believe the Reds have a top height of 9500.

There have been many studies done over the years regarding basing policies for RAFAT. It was even mooted once that they could be based in Cyprus (a Supply Officer I know thought it was a great idea as 'it would be a role reversal as we could sleep with THEIR wives when They were on detachment'). In reality though Lincs is a great spot with regards transit distance to shows (and therefore the cost of running the team). With regards the airspace, they need something with decent vertical extent for obvious reasons. Lincolnshire is one of the few regions that remains more Mil than Civ so it's as good a place as any.

Interesting times for Gamston and Sandtoft if this get the thumbs up.

Thanks for the map of the proposed CAS......I suppose it's just an inevitable consequence of the the expansion of business and leisure avaition......Oh, nearly forgot .....light blue touchpaper and retire.

:ugh:

NIKNAK; the Reds SHARE an airfield with someone else? You gotta be joking, even when they're at Akrotiri everyone else, whether trooping flights or target towers or fighters on detachment has to hold off and give way to them. That's why they moved to Scampton from Cranwell in the first place!
