Radar display orientation

Just out of pure curiosity: are radar displays in southern hemisphere south-oriented?

SirToppamHat 16th Sep 2005 21:04

WHY WOULD THEY BE?

My only experience of this is in the Falklands. All the radars I controlled on were orientated North!

They also go round in the same direction as northern hemisphere radars - they are not affected by whatever it is that makes the water go down the plug holes the wrong way!;)

LOL, I never thought of it Coriolis force in that case ;)

I thought they could be reversed for practical reasons; something like having N/S flight levels in France as opposed to E/W in most of Europe (I believe thay should have N/S in Chile for obvious reasons too ;) )

Tweety 17th Sep 2005 10:57

IF that is the case that the Frogs use NS for levels and be different from everybody else then all I can say is that is an accident waiting to happen. Trust the French!!

In aviation there are far too many variables so to maintain safety it is best to stick to ICAO standards as much as possible, this way there is less chance of something slipping through the holes of the cheese.

Tweety,
If the majority of tracks are North/South, why would a country identify FL direction as East/West?

I think the variations in Language, Transition Altitudes and Metric/Decimal are more relevevant in safety terms.

have you seen just how many deviations from ICAO the UK has filed?

To conform with the semi circular rule I presume.

I think PA is quite correct; the UK's re-invention of the wheel continues apace.

Last time I looked there were 38 pages of filed differences from ICAO in the UK AIP. That must be a record!

ILS 119.5 17th Sep 2005 23:01

we stand on our heads to read them, also the myth that the water goes down the plughole anticlockwise is false.

DirtyPierre 17th Sep 2005 23:40

All radar displays in Oz are north orientated. In fact when I worked at Willy tower (NSW), which faces south, the radar was still north orientated.

JustaFew 19th Sep 2005 11:47

The ATM in the previous tower at Liverpool was orientated south at the top because the ADC was facing south. However, the APR atco had their radar with north at the top. Somewhat confusing if you were providing breaks to both ADC & APR.....

SirToppamHat 19th Sep 2005 13:38

Thinking back, I seem to recall that one of the radars in Cyprus was set up 90 degrees out from true North ... or am I just imagining it ??? Not that I ever saw it myself of course, but I understand it was a bit of a shock for the operators ...

IIRC Gatwick tower might have the only south facing radar.

vintage ATCO 20th Sep 2005 13:21

Nope, the ATM in the tower at Luton is south orientated.
