LHR Gnd -split or not split?

LHR Gnd one recent evening (after 8:30 PM)....Controller was working like the proverbial one armed wallpaper hanger, inbounds, outbounds, a/c not reading back, a/c unable to park... all this on single frequency , not the usual North/South split ......
Just wondered if it is normal for the whole of GND to be handled by a single controller at that time of night......

Not saying this is the reason, but has staffing become a problem again?

Sometimes, as jerricho says, it can be a staffing issue. If some staff call in sick then, in order to provide sufficient breaks to comply with SCRATCOH, the two seats have to be put together. If it is due to staffing then there will sometimes be some sort of inbound flow rate put on, along with some start up delays for departures as well.

It could also be the case however that the seats were put together when ground wasn't at all busy, but heathrow being heathrow with its outstanding airfield layout :D, and equally excellent stand allocation :) , topped off with the hassle-free work in progress :{ , it can very quickly and very easily get very busy and it could be a few minutes before someone comes up from a break to split the positions again.

And,

Controller was working like the proverbial one armed wallpaper hanger
we always do anyway!!!:D ;) :}
