What's this at EDI

This construction has been ongoing for a few weeks at EDI.

Anyone reveal what it is?

Apologies if this is the wrong forum.

Looks like an ILS localiser...

Do I get a merit point for being right? Do I, do I? Please Sir....

DtyCln 24th Mar 2005 10:31

or maybe an MLS? (Microwave Landing System) for non acronym types.

Don't know just guessing.

av8boy 24th Mar 2005 15:48

My money is on it being the Rwy 06 localiser (which is located at the departure end of 6/approach end of 24). MLS tend to look more like a box, in my experience.

Naw!!
They're obviously going to start greyhound racing at week-ends!

Swift 24th Mar 2005 21:07

av8boy is right; it's the new 06 localiser.

Talking about EDI, their new tower is starting to take shape.

Talk about thread-creep!

I think there is grave danger of everybody forgetting that this thread started with a question and I was the one who gave the correct answer. I have so little joy in my life...

Hey Dave,
You're right, man. Respect is due, as the young people say these days.
;)

av8boy 31st Mar 2005 21:54

As the proud owner of two young people, I'm still trying to figure out "props" to my "peeps..." :ooh:

Thanks for that, Nudger. I'm much better now.

The simple answer to that specific question is: ATC are bending the rules at GLA. In the UK, ATC is not permitted to offer visual approaches to IFR traffic. The pilot has to make a request.

As far as noise is concerned, don't fall into the trap of thinking that just because you're over a city that's where the noise issues are. At MAN, all of the "noise sensitive" areas are little villages out in the sticks of leafy Cheshire - nobody seems to give a monkey's about noise in Stockport. Hence on 06 we can achieve a much better departure rate than on 24.

At EDI, the same is true. The "noise sensitive" areas are mainly the wealthy areas around Crammond, which are pretty much where you would be turning final (with everything dangling) on a visual approach for 24. Hence the night-time visual approach ban.

I know a lot of this is frustrating for you (believe me, it is for us too) but you cannot say that these things are somehow within the gift of ATC to sort - because, quite simply, they are not.

I would like nothing better than to have the first two or three IFR arrivals in a sequence on visual approaches: it means I can forget about them (almost) and get on with something else. But the reality is that we are working within a framework of (sometimes perceived rather than real) concerns from local residents that BAA are trying - diplomatically, I think - to address.

Wow!

With the new thread started, this one can be just about my being right about something! My 16 year old daughter will NEVER believe it!
