ATC folk - any chance of footie scores during world cup?

Hi,

Just wondering, is there anyone out there who gives updates on important footie scores while the airwaves are quiet? I mean, obviously not those of you sitting in West Drayton sweating as the ATR-42 makes slow progress towards the localizer during the rush hour, but peeps on quiet parts on quiet days?

"Speedbird 426, turn right heading 240 to intercept the localizer closing in from the left, england 2, nigeria 1, report localizer established..."

hehe. Cheers, someoneīs gotta be a footie fan out there, world cup is looming!

Don't remember that chapter in the MATS Part II :)

At MACC though we're always happy to oblige

Oh nice one, you lot at Manchester are very nice people, is there something you put in the tea?

callyoushortly 13th Jan 2002 20:35

If you're heading up Edinburgh way I'll be sure to help you out.... just ask away, everyone knows... Tower always has the answer!!!!!

viva77 13th Jan 2002 20:37

You mean like the Lufthansa who was allegedly told to "taxy to stand fifty one, thats 5-1?" Whats the point in asking in Scotland; they're not interested! Try Brum instead.

Spoonbill 13th Jan 2002 20:50

Nah..........................sorry - we'll be too busy watching the football to talk to aeroplanes....... :) :)

DVR6K 13th Jan 2002 21:22

Wow, loads of people keen to help out!

Never know whether to risk asking or not! Sometimes itīs the "Yes, certainly G-ABCD, standby" and other times itīs "Negative G-ABCD, this is NOT a sportsdesk blah de blah". Groovy stuff.

DVR6K, I speak to you guys lots, so count on the updates as they come in!!!

ayrprox 13th Jan 2002 22:06

Not everybody working at Scottish talks with a scottish accent :)
I'll be just as interested in the football as anybody, and if you would be interested in an update just ask. I for one will be happy to oblidge with updates on how much England are beating Argentina by( no references to the war I promise!) :) :) :)

I`m sure that those of us at the new Swanwick Centre will be happy to oblige this summer - provided the frequency is not too busy, please ask - we will do our best to accomodate; plus it gives the LAS`s something to do, we can send them off on a fact-finding mission to the TV room!

BEXIL160 13th Jan 2002 23:11

Like most at I'll endeavour to provide timely info on the scores.(What's an LAS for, anyway?)

Just looking ahead though, England's first game is on 2nd June at 1830 local.... not completely sure about the time zones, but allowing for BST, I reckon that means a kick-off at 0530 local UK time, so by the end of the second half things might be a little busy on the London Freqs.

The second England game is a bit later, at 2030 local (0730 BST?), on 7th June (vs. Argentina... wonder if Becks will play?), perhaps a little more "scope" for reporting.... maybe.

I may be in the hour club with the UK timings, but either way it's gonna be in a busy part of the AM.

I am a sweaty person at West Drayton and I often give out football rugby and cricket scores, especially to our foregn customers - I think they appreciate it!

Muppit 14th Jan 2002 03:41

Lets face it, our job's all about customer service, and that means you!

Happy to oblige!

le loup garou 14th Jan 2002 03:47

As reports will depend on how busy the controller is, why not put the most recent scores on the atis. "pilots are reminded that wing tip clearance is not assured and that England are two nil up"

No problems with it over here. In fact if the poms are losing I will direct the scores to BAW pilots

Passed the final score between England and Germany, that 5-1 thrashing to an inbound Britannia.

He said that he would wait until they had landed to avoid dangerous in flight celebrations!

If the freq sounds quiet please ask, someone in the room is sure to know, in fact as England scored each goal in this game, the noise from the rest room was probably being broadcast with each ATC instruction!

eyeinthesky 14th Jan 2002 15:58

What if there is someone else on the frequency who is recording the match to watch when he gets home and doesn't want to know the score?

spekesoftly 14th Jan 2002 16:57

They will just have to press the 'mute' button !

BEXIL160 14th Jan 2002 19:43

eyeinthesky....

LOOK AWAY NOW>>>>> :) :) :) ???
