Frankfurt SIDs
 

Flying into FRA every now and then, I can´t avoid shaking my head over the plethora of SIDs that have sprung up in the last couple of years, and then all being dublicated in the Jeppesen as RNAV Overlays. I know FRA is not the only place with nearly half an inch of SIDs (AMS and CDG are nearly as bad), but if there is anybody involved with German ATC here I would like to get an idea of what the issue is? I hope the German unemployment situation is not being abated by hiring people to draw up new SIDs? Any enlightening comments?

I´m working above the Frankfurt FIR, therefore not really involved in SID´s. But monitoring aviation business in Germany quite closely I can give you the reason:
Every German wants to fly but none of them wants to see or even hear an aircraft. Every STAR or SID goes to court immediately after publishing. There are hundreds of citizens action groups around every airport. This forces german ATC to change SIDs a lot and have a lot of them, to let every housing in the vicinity of Frankfurt share the same amount of noise.
German notion to aviation is very hostile!

The situation in EHAM is similar to EDDF. Due to its being surrounded by houses, most of them built after the airport was developed, inhabited by a vociferous population seemingly 100% against aviation it is neccessary to balance out runway use and sometimes use odd combinations; additionaly, as much as possible, built up areas are avoided, leading to some rather complicated SIDs/SARs.
