Do we qualify for tax relief??

As a student ATCO do you receive TAX RELIEF as you are on a training course which you must complete to do the job??

Thought i'd ask here before asking the tax man.

Would be nice if we did cause that Career Development Loan is gonna take a lot out of the wage packet at the school!

Tried HR but nobody replies to the damn answering machine.... annoyed - we'll get back to you today......YEAH RIGHT! 5 days and still waiting!

Any knowledge out there on this one......or am i clutching at the proverbial straw??

TIA :ok:

If anybody is at the school as a trainee (or an instructor) maybe they can provide an answer.

Tried the taxman but got fed up holding after going through the stupid computerised machine....

Why can't you just connect to a human! stupid waste of time!

:ok:

I'm at the college (well sort of, holding at LACC at the moment), but nobody has ever mentioned anything about tax relief to us as far as I am aware.

Also we don't qualify for too many 'student' discounts, as we are called Trainees.

There are rumours about reclaiming tax from the monthly travel expenses but I haven't found out about that yet.

Are you talking about with NATS ?

In which case you are employed and paid a salary, hence normal tax rules apply.

Or as self sponsored ??

tired-flyboy 24th Jun 2004 12:31

I was talking about NATS.

I remember (correctly i hope) that if you were doing a professional qualification course then you were entitled to tax relief only for the period covered by your professional studies...but i don't remember where i read this.

Prob wrong....ah well

As a 'student', the following are non taxable:
  • Student Loans
  • Grants
  • Contributions from your parents
  • Scholarships
  • Research Awards
  • Housing Benefits
  • Gifts and loans from relatives
  • Income from ISAs
  • Prizes won by students due to academic excellence

Anything else you earn from an employer even as a 'student' is taxable within the rules laid down by the Inland Revenue. Sorry !!

In the NATS case, you are not a 'student' in any case, i.e you are not following the Higher Education path. You are an employee who is being trained. You'll be taxed just like the thousands like me who have gone before you !! Remember though that it is a sliding scale. Nothing on the first £4745, 10% on the first £2K (approx) after that, 22% on the next £29K approx.

There are other rules for travel and related expenses. NATS have agreements on these with the Inland Revenue and you will be told what you can and can't claim (along with any limits) when you start your course.

Cheers

I got it all from the tax website .... friendly lot in my experience ;)

tired-flyboy 24th Jun 2004 13:21

i must have been looking in the wrong bit of the site then - couldn't find a thing except how to claim tax credits!

You are able to claim back some tax on mileage clamims through the T&RE system.

I have just sent a claim off for the tax from last years mileage, its 300.00 thats 150 beer vouchers which is a bonus!

You need to email HR with your staff number they will supply mileage details and the amount you can claim for the PREVIOUS tax year.
