AUS "leaving FL###" when identified

G'day folks,

Do we need to report leaving a flight level when given traffic or cleared to descend "when ready"?

AIP ENR 1.7, page 7, para 4.1.6 seems to suggest we do.

My confusion arises from not having to report maintaining a flight level if identified during climb-out.

Yes you do. However, I couldn't care less - I can see you have left the cruise.

Awesome cheers. There's been quite a lot of banter amongst our crew on this one so it's nice to be able to put it to bed.

I usually use the leaving level report as a prompt to assign a lower level, so I do find it useful.
