Security Security

In UK airspace on 121.5 I often hear a message something like this

" Security Security
Temporary Danger Area
SAR Ops established xx.xxN yy.yyW
Radius 2 miles upto 3,000feet
No restrictions"

Now when I hear these messages I'm usually 200 miles away and at 35,000 feet.

My question is, who is supposed to take action on this message?

A ppl flying round the area is unlikely to hear it as they won't be monitoring 121.5.

Would ATC units in the area pick it up or would they get the message through AFTN?

CAP413...

10.78 Military Safety Broadcast – Securité : Military ground stations may commence a broadcast message with ‘SECURITÉ SECURITÉ SECURITÉ’ (SEC-URI-TAY spoken three times) to inform all traffic that the message contains information affecting safety, but not an emergency situation. Aircraft acknowledgement is not required, however aircraft may contact the ground station to obtain further details.

A ppl flying round the area is unlikely to hear it as they won't be monitoring 121.5.
Good question....I guess the assumption is the PPL would be VFR unless under IMC.

The broadcasts are useful to GA in Class G airspace. We hear them because we flip box 2 to 121.5 as standard when we're not using it for anything else.

As 'mixture' quotes, it's military, and in aviation it's primarily intended for military use. However in the civil maritime environment's Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) a Maritime Safety Message is similarly transmitted as a 'Security Message'.

ATSUs should receive signals regarding temporary airspace restrictions and take action accordingly. The temporary airspace restrictions which can catch people out are those Restricted Areas suddenly imposed on rare occasions by police authorities, and there's no way of preparing for that other than maintaining a continuous listening watch on 121.5, which is not entirely practicable for the SPA PPL.

Securite not security. Pronounced like Securitay and not securitey.

It's usually for helicopters and military ac in low level areas. You hear it more often in the North England/Scotland.

TDA normally established around airborne SAR activity. I remember working out lat/long one day to find it was a mile away from the airport I was working, an OAP had gone missing from a local hospital, quick call to RCC who hadn't worked out it was in our ATZ/CTR and we became controlling authority when the Seaking turned up!
