Saying "Boeing 77W" or "Boeing 777-300ER"?

When being asked by ATC for aircraft type, what should we reply, Boeing 77W or Boeing 777-300ER?
Why does ATC have to ask while aircraft type was stated in ATC flight plan?

Some units (like mine in the Middle East) don't always get AFTN flight plans and you have to type one in to the centre's automation system to get tags and strips on the other sectors.

Actual type designator (Boeing 77W for example) is preferred.

The AFTN drops flight plans more than you'd believe, or in some cases the data exchange between one external unit to the next drops.

The time it takes to get a hard copy from the AFTN network is time consuming, and is usually faster to just ask the aircraft.
