Challenges in On the job training (OJT) ATC

Hello all,

I am a Master's student at Cranfield University and I am conducting research concerning challenges in the ATC on-the-job training (OJT). The aim of this research is to investigate why trainees fail in OJT and to make recommendations to minimize the failure rate at this stage.

In order to do so, I have designed an online administered survey consisting of 5-6 demographic questions and 5-7 opend-ended questions.

I am looking for current trainees in OJT, newly licensed ATCOs, OJT instructors (OJTIs), and ex-trainees who were unsuccessful in OJT, who are willing to participate in this survey and would like to share their challenges and how they tried to/are trying to overcome these.
You will be kept anonymous and the data you will be providing can only be accessed by me and my supervisor from Cranfield University.

I would be most grateful if you are willing to complete the survey. If so, please leave me a private message.

Thank you!

(sorry for my name, it is in progress, PPrune entered this name for me and I did not see where to edit it, but my new name is in progress. I'm not able to reply on this thread somehow -my messages are not posted-, so that is why I'm editing this message all the time)

2 options:
1)bad human resources, thus the student is no good at all to do the job
2)bad human resources, thus the instructor is no good at all to do the job

Looking for a 3th option but so far I have no clue

To the post originator...

First, get a pronounceable name. Personally, I find it a little insulting to view your name as if a chimpanzee has been let loose at a keyboard.
Second, if you want such information, have the courtesy to explain who you are and why and for whom you are "conducting research" and what makes it "non-commercial". Who are "we" who are going to minimise failures?
Third, your methodology appears somewhat disjointed. How are you to obtain meaningful data from your target groups? Current trainees have not yet failed (and, we trust, will not fail); recently licensed ATCOs, by definition, have not failed; and any ex-trainees who did not succeed might not have a dispassionate view of the reasons.

Insulting?

Yes! I agree with 2 Sheds, if anybody wants to start a rational discussion on professional matters, they should be prepared to say who they are, with suitable caveats if they are at some risk to their career for asking, and why they want to know.

The Aviation Industry has had a century of being let down by reasonable sounding people who turn out to be sensationalists when they have got what wanted. Some journalists in the sixties were referred to as "Holiday Jet Plunge" correspondents as that was the only aviation phrase they knew, no matter how often they were told less sensational information!

Some of us have been around long enough to know better than to talk about the job unless we know to whom and why, and feel, yes, insulted, if people just launch into a topic.

@ Sabai101,
you could start by having a look at one or two of the "stickys'' at the top of this (ATC) forum board. I'd imagine the NATS one would be most pertinent.

sabai101 - it might help if you said what your interview was for?? Is it the NATS ATCO scheme?? if so, which stage is your interview?

by the sounds of things, you're woefully underprepared, so good luck - you're going to need it

I assume Sabai101's interview is not for an ATCO job.

sorry, NATS ATCO scheme being the trainee ATCO scheme. Not sure they have a scheme for qualified ATCOs.

To the thread originator
You have now edited your original post to such a degree that the reasons for subsequent criticisms are no longer evident. It would have been better if you had merely posted again with the explanations.

Sabai101
I appreciate that you started with an apology, but you and your responders are, in effect, hijacking this thread. The idea is to start a new thread for a new topic!
