I believe an engineer selected shut down all radar monitors by mistake. I would have thought there would have been a fail safe choice like..........

I also believe "bonuses were never compromised and at no time was there any danger of management ever getting it right"

Will they never learn? What happened to the culture of safety?
FWIW somebody pulled the plug at Maastricht UAC back in the 1970s with similar results luckily on a weekend IIRC so no great panic from La Belle Étage.
It became the first study case on safety evaluation courses

I think this possibility for total radar failure (14 minutes in this case ) was highlighted previously when the new equipment was installed and tested at PC.
No doubt "risk management" decided that there was only an extremely remote chance it would happen

When I did my Area Procedural oral board exam @ Hurn in 1973, the first question Malcolm Lucas asked me was " why are we bothering to teach you procedural control when we're already going into a radar environment". Says I "so when the radar fails, we know what to do ". With a grin from all the board members , he said " but the engineers say that won't happen". I think I got several brownie points when I replied " that's what they thought at New York Centre until it dropped out last month!"

Brings back memories for me Eric....
Hope the EFPS thingy still works when the plug gets pulled.. Within days of one move I made into a new ops room the whole place died. That is, all except the bits of paper we had with funny scrawls on. Those and some standby R/T kept a lot of people alive that day.

I assume that the regulators will be asking for explanations and maybe calling for heads to roll. We'll see how serious they are about safety now.
