Hi all,

I applied in December for ATC, as I am looking to possibly transition from flying. Just received an e-mail inviting me for an online assessment phase, I have some basic books on aptitude testing but nothing specific. Is there anything that can help me more than the samples on the SHL site?

The SHL practice tests are all you'll need. I only did them and googled for some more free tests and it worked fine. The actual tests are probably not as hard as the practice ones. Good luck.

I have my assessment day in Melbourne on February the 1st. I'm quite excited the only thing I'm worried about is what to wear. The email said to wear business casual but I have absolutely terrible fashion sense. Can anybody else who has completed the assessment day give me some indication on what others wore to their assessment.

bennett.wildfire - treat it like an interview. Wear trousers and a collared business shirt. That's what I wore. Some people wore jeans and looked okay, but I wouldn't do that myself.

Thanks so much Whipsr, that's exactly the info I needed. I'll have him talk to someone at the academy before we start booking anything but at least I know now it's a possibility.

I think Whisper has given you poor advice. I would not recommend any extended period of leave during your training Maybe up to a week if you have a wedding or something important to go to, but 3 weeks for a holiday is to much. The training is difficult and the skills learnt need to be practiced over and over again to perfect them. Taking a 3 week break will set you back. It also doesn't show a great attitude. People will think (rightly or wrongly) that you re not dedicated to your training and why should I bother with you.

I am with willadvise. I retired after 42 years last October. During that time I had numerous trainees and here is no way I'd go along with a break like the one described. Experienced controllers require a familiarisation shift after leave and they know what they are doing.

A trainee will be busy enough as it is without making it more difficult on himself. Added to the lack of continuity, in all likelihood there will be new documentation published whilst away. (TLI, LOA, AIRAC update) which has to be assimilated.

Willadvise: if you read my post I suggested that taking leave prior to, or just after, the field sim wouldn't be too disruptive but later on wouldn't be a good idea.

Chances are that they will finish up at the academy and then get parked doing famil for 2 months anyway..

When I completed my training I managed to take 2 weeks off prior to field sim and it was a godsend considering I felt fairly burnt out by the end of field training, and my next upcoming leave was 18months away.

Greetings

Hello all,

I have done my best to read through the bulk of this thread, woah a lot of old information about things that have changed,

I applied 1st of jamuary and already have a phone interview on Tuesday ! hopefully all goes well, but i am more nervous about the additional testing done in melbourne, i get the jist of it, but can someone tell me is it similar to the defence force recruiting officer selection board style stuff? and also i noticed we have to do that online aptitiude test again, is it the same one different questions? i.e sit in a computer fill it out all things explained prior and what not or is it more a paper back assessment ?

hope my questions arnt digging to deep into what one would consider "coached anwsers"...

Cheers !

Needing some info and opinions, PLEASE

I had a call with AsA yesterday and they told me I could choose between:
Jandakot Airport in Perth -or- Bankstown Airport in Sydney

Does anyone have any information about these facilities and the areas they are in? I have a family of 5, so I'd kind of like to know how the area would be to raise a family, and cost of living/housing, and just whatever other info you can offer on that end. Also, what are these airports like? Pretty busy; right?

Thanks in advance for any info!

WhichWayIsNorth, they said they have a class date for me next February (2016). Have you gotten any information about what Bankstown is like? Are you heading over there with a family, or just you?

Gfosty its just me going at this stage.
Haven't got any info besides the research I have done online into rental prices etc. The Sydney area is obviously an expensive place to live, also apparently certain parts of Bankstown are not the best areas... You could always live nearby though, for example in Sutherland.

WhichWayIsNorth, I moved to Sydney from the USA so if you have any questions about the area, I can try to help. I am probably not the best but I will do what I can.

Gfrosty, I went through a conversion course with an British Air Force guy. He just moved his family of 4 from England to Perth. If you shoot me your email, I can ask him to contact you. Jandakot is south of Perth Int'l but prob close enough to give you some info.

Good luck everyone!

Referee Check

Hey all,

Attended the assessment centre in Melbourne last week and got an email this Monday about providing contact details for 2 referees. Is this a positive indication of moving on to referee checks or just a formality for all candidates?

Any candidates from last week's AC days on here?

Snikeron - Definitely a positive sign, they're not going to waste their time if not interested.

Good luck!

Hope to see you at the college sometime soon. I start April 13th.

Thanks ant1984! After spending some free time last night perusing this thread from 2011 I'm a little more confident of waiting longer for an offer, but am naturally not one to be too confident until I have an offer in writing from ASA.

When I asked the HR peeps on AC day when the next batch would be for enroute (my pref) they mentioned August this year, so fingers crossed, I'll get to butt heads then with some of you here!

Hi Snickeron, I got the same update you had to update your referees. So I think we are on the the final phases! I elected for tower and was told the next intake was in 2016 :S

Oh well, there is light at the end of the tunnel.

All I can say to you Snickeron and Bennett is be patient, be very, very patient. I had my Assessment Day last September, reference check a couple of weeks after that, got all the medical stuff sorted last November and still have not been formally offered a position or given a start date. It's doing my head in, but what can you do. I've elected for Tower and they told me August this year, maybe February 2016.

Hope this helps.
