Stage 1 spatial reasoning tests (cubes)
Hello Guys and Gals
Just a quick question and apologies if this is in repitition to a previous thread. For those of you who have completed the stage 1 NATS test, Would you be so kind as to answer this question please.
I understand that stage 1 part 2 consists of questions relating to cubes and diagramming. I've gathered that the cube questions are answered as multiple choice. Could you please tell me whether the multiple choice answers consist of one right answer, and the rest wrong, or one wrong answer and the rest right. Putting it in simple terms. Do we need to ascertain which option is right or wrong from the options provided.
I apologise in advance if any of you lovely people regard this as cheating. Good Luck to all those who have applied, at whatever stage.

have you ever known a multiple choice test to have only 1 wrong answer and the rest all correct??? If so - that kind of makes an easy test format even easier, surely?!

I understand your line of questioning. There are two apps that I'm currently using (skytest and spatial IQ). Both use different approaches to test their users. From your message, I guess I can surmise that the skytest cube test meets the methods employed by NATS.
How many questions address each diagram? Is there one question for each 2d cube diagram?

@pearlz go back some pages on this forum you will find all relevant information regarding recent stage one assessment.
regarding the recruitment freeze NATS will continue to process all successful applicants but they will stop recruiting new applicants as from 1st of March.

I have got my stage one booked for 22nd of this month in Birmingham. Reading the NATS literature sent with the e-mail and doing some practice tests. I was wondering, and I know it has been mentioned on here somewhere but for the life of me I can't find it, is there an alternative site to Skytest as I use a Macbook and I won't have time to sort out a copy of Windows and get the practice in before my test?
If anyone has got a useful suggestion for websites I would be very grateful.
Also, does anyone happen to know just how far Birmingham New Street station is to the Novotel on Broad Street. Got to be back in Chester straight after for work. Not ideal, but there we go.

Richard, 2 weeks (ish) to prepare for Stage 1 is, in my opinion, plenty. A few hours a night, maybe more at the weekends if you're concerned, and if you're of the right sort of intelligence for the job then you'll be fine. Get yourself booked for something at the end of Feb or you'll regret it!

Well lads , it's official , the waiting time is now 24 month REGARDLESS of the date you have failed . To be more clear :
- if you sat your online basic in september 2012 you can reaplly in september 2014 .
So the rules comes in play for ALL candidates , not only for those applying after the 1st of April .
That being said , congratulations to all who applied and went all the way through , good luck with training , OJT and validation and with your wonderful career.
As for me , I'm outta here . I think 29 y.o. it's a good age to stick to my current career . Adam Tusk OVER AND OUT

Top tips for Stage 1:
The 'pass mark' for each test is more of a trade off between speed and accuracy. For example, the 'cubes' test has 40 questions in 20 minutes.
On this basis, if you completed 40/40 questions and got half wrong, you'd fail the test (Poor accuracy)
If you completed 35/40 and got 5 questions wrong you'd pass. (Good trade off)
If you completed 20/40 questions and got them all correct, you'd fail. (Poor speed)
Similarly, with regards to the 'diagramming' test, it works on the same logic, but a bit more room for error I believe.
On this basis if you completed the whole test 50/50 questions and got up to 35-40 questions correct, you'd pass. (Good trade off)
If you completed 20/50 questions and got them all correct, you'd fail. (Very poor speed)

I'm going to attend my S1 on 21st on Sheffield at 9am. I'm flying from Portugal to Stansted and then take the coach to Sheffield. I'm going on the 20th and will stay at the Ibis.

Off into Waterstones today as well to try and find some books to take to work.
I've got my S1 at 10am. Would have preferred to have been later but need to make sure I am back in time for work.
This is probably the only chance I am going to get to apply for this so the nerves are starting to get to me already. Like everyone else who has applied I'm sure, I really want this.
Just hope worrying about it all doesn't cost me.
Off into Waterstones today as well to try and find some books to take to work.

Afternoon folks!
I booked my S1 yesterday for this coming Friday at the Novotel Birmingham, at 11am. Hopefully I finish at 1pm and not beforehand!
Travelling down from Glasgow by train on the Thursday afternoon so that I'll (hopefully) have enough time and a relaxing journey - particularly if it's snowing and the trains are all delayed to
Like everyone else who has their S1s next week, I'm nervous as hell. Nerves are good though. Well, so they say!
I'm just reading through the NATS leaflet and trying to absorb it in, as much as possible. As for the spatial awareness/cubes tests, I downloaded a brilliant app on my android this morning. Search for "spatial reasoning" on the Google Play store and the free app should be at the top of the list. It's addictive as hell, and excellent at brushing up on solving the horrendous cubes.
Burning out the app and reading through the NATS stuff is what I'll be doing from now until next Friday morning!
Good luck to everyone who has their S1s next week (and also S2s/S3s!). Wise words I've been told: if you don't make it, then it's not the end of the world!

After reading through all of the very helpful advice on the forum I have finally decided to join. Have booked my Stage 1 test for 1pm on 21st Feb at the Novotel in Sheffield.
I will be going down on the 20th Feb and staying overnight at the Novotel so I would be happy to meet up with anyone who will be there too. Just leave a message or PM me.

lol any tips would be greatly appreciated. I have went over the information leaflet at least 20 times. Ive taking the majority of it in but struggling remembering all the aircraft speeds, seating capacity etc. Anyways anyone else heading out on the 22nd and Birmingham and have their test at 9am? Good Luck to all!!!!

I am new to this forum also, have my first assessment day on the 22nd at Bham also - good luck to everyone else also attending! I am currently revising the booklet provided and practising the examples provided. Whilst reading through this thread i see talk of a numeracy test and a basic checking test at stage 1 however I have no mention of these on my e-mail from NATS. Do these tests still exsist at stage 1 and can anyone please advise on how best to prepare if they do? any help/advice/tips about stage 1 would be much appreciated and thanks so much to everyone who has already posted on the forum all info has been very useful and informative! Thanks again
