There was a rumour that it was not available to trainees on the most recent pay package (the one that replaced the ATCO T&D grade with TATC2 or whatever they call it). Not sure how true that is.

According to NATS' careers site at http://www.natscareers.co.uk if you click "careers" - "Job Descriptions", click "Controllers", click "Careers FAQs", click "Terms and conditions" and finally click "What are the salary and salary prospects?"
From there I gather that you will not recieve shift pay while validating.
You can download a PDF with this info too located at
http://natscareers.co.uk/PDFs/NATS%2...nformation.pdf

hi folks,
i received word a couple of weeks ago that i was successful in getting a place in the next course.
however, while sorting my finances, i have realised that money will be tight on 10,000 p.a for the first 9 months approx.
in relation to this i have 2 questions:
1. do you think a bank would give a loan to a student controller? (i'm not a UK resident so am not familiar with the generosity of UK banks)
2. would i be permitted to perhaps defer entry til the december course instead of the september course? if i worked til december i may be able to save enough that way.
i realise i could ask HR about question 2 in particular but wanted to get some feedback here if possible before actually ringing them and stirring things for myself.
i would really like to not be worrying about finances while training as i want to give this my all.
any info would be very much appreciated.
thanks,
s.

I'd suggest you phone HR ASAP on question number two. Any answer you get from here will be unoffical. After all, HR decide which course you start on.
Where have you been for the last six months?

re; shift pay, unfortunately it does state the newer courses will not receive it at the units until validation....small consolation pay does jump from 10k to 18k on completion at the college (approx 9months).
Have to agree harsh not receiving some form of shift allowance as training at units will consist working weekends/bank holidays/nights.
Semifinalist- most banks require uk residency for loans. Not said where you from but have you tried local banks. Also if you wish to defer talk to HR.... some people defer due employment reasons or other personal reasons, they may be flexible(HR flexible? )
Anyway goodluck

thanks guys,
Gonzo
lol. what i really meant is that my financial situation has turned out to be a little less than i hoped for and so the 10,000 issue has turned into a slightly bigger one.
also, just said i'd post here before ringing Hr about deferring just on the off chance that someone else had been in a similar situation before. i take your point though.
i'll undboubtedly sort something out re my finances.

i will be resident while training and will have to open a bank a/c in england so that nats can pay me the big bucks so therefore, they might give me a loan then?
thanks

One more question, where the information mentions anniversaries from joining NATS, is that from the date when I start college or from the date I start my unit training? The info is not very clear for someone who doesn't know the company!

I was in a similar situation as yourself and HR had no problem with me defering to the September course.

semifinalist,
Bear in mind one of the risks you will be taking, and I'm sure HR will point this out, is that the Terms and Conditions might change before before then.
While I'm not aware of any reason why they should, it's technically possible.

in what way? they could bring the 10,000 down even further?! or are you referring to the starting and finishing times?

I'm not saying any of those will happen, or are likely to happen, but they technically could. It's a risk. Ask those who deferred entry to NATS and got stung by the reduction to 10k...
