High Court imposes Australian rules on foreign ships

The full bench of the High Court in Canberra has delivered a landmark ruling that enforces new rules on foreign crews working in the domestic shipping industry.

The unanimous decision gives the Australian Industrial Relations Commission (IRC) jurisdiction over foreign ships and crew and makes them subject to local conditions and rates of pay.

The case was sparked after an Australian company replaced its local crew with overseas workers.

The National Secretary of the Maritime Union of Australia, Paddy Crumlin, has described it as the most important High Court decision relating to shipping since the end of World War II.

"The High Court can't agree seven to zero if the sun rises in the east," he said.

"They've determined seven to zero that this is an Australian domestic industry where Australian domestic labour laws has to apply, so this is an industry for an Australian workforce."

Does this mean the end of Jetconnect in OZ?
