Absolutely nothing new.
SQ did this in 1981 when the B707 was retired from the fleet, and again later when the DC10's left.
The older guys would not be retained on newer equipment...in addition, this was (in the past, maybe now) a way to get rid of the folks that they didn't like or were uncooperative.
Businesses do this every day of the week, worldwide.

Can anyone give us a breakdown of where the retrenchments came from. Were they fleet specific or base specific or as 411a has mentioned, was it just an opportunity to get rid of a few who didn`t toe the company line.
