The article (http://www.economist.com/science/displayStory.cfm?story_id=1907725) discusses a recent publication in the South African Medical Journal. Apparently D-dimer levels ("a molecule associated with clot formation") were also high in those taking aspirin which, counterintuitively, is often prescribed to reduce clot formation and thus prevent heart attacks. I wonder if they asked if they were taking other NSAIDs which are said to counteract the protective activity of aspirin?
