A string of Ryanair aircraft came into Luton this afternoon but does anyone know why?

Accordind to Ryanair the runway is closed 'due to an incident'.

The following report is on Ryanairs web site:
'Due to an incident earlier this afternoon the runway at Stansted Airport is closed until circa 1600. This will cause disruption and delays to the flight schedule from Stansted for the remainder of the day'.

From the BBC:

Plane lands safety after mayday call

A Ryanair passenger plane landed safely at Stansted Airport in Essex on Monday afternoon after sending a mayday message to flight controllers.
The Boeing 737-200 with between 100 and 150 passengers and crew on board, landed at 1425 BST.

A spokesman for Stansted Airport told BBC News Online the aircrew had reported a suspected engine problem.

The plane had taken off from Luton Airport and was bound for Dublin.

No one was hurt in the incident.

Flights at Stansted were delayed until 1600 because of the unscheduled landing.

I'll bet there is a really simple answer to this question but why did the aircraft not return to LTN??

Assuming it occured shortly after take off, the runway in use at Luton was 08, so the aircraft was heading east initially and crew could well have seen Stansted from the flight deck?

That welcoming long runway in Essex would have assisted in an overworked cockpit.

I recall a Monarch minibus losing a donk on the Luton 08 climbout a couple of years ago and he diverted into EGSS too.

Longer runway, right in front of you etc... pretty sensible choice I guess.

Yeh better to shut the runway at Stansted for 2 hours than Luton as we need the money. Thank you Ryanair as LTN was on a nice little earner yesterday afternoon.

Ryanair 200, reported engine fire soon after take off- around 10,000 ft. Shut down engine and emergency landing in STN.

Reason for runway shut at STN.... overweight landing, braked so hard on runway that tyres and brakes went as one and A/C in question jacked up and towed away! EI-CKR now on 72R!

No one hurt and not sure if the engine really was on fire, lots of smoke reported though.... will speak to an engineer!!!
