Anybody read the report on the L39 overrun at Duxford ?

It can be found at :-

http://www.aaib.dft.gov.uk/bulletin/jul03/jul03in.htm

Interesting reading

Itching to make comment, but might offend. Neck wound in !

Firstly the fact that a fellow aviator lost their life makes the report a sad read. My thoughts go to all those involved.

What a strange gear retraction system in that the gear will only retract on the ground IF the nose wheel is held off !?! I`m finding it hard to think of a situation you`d find yourself in that you`d have that option available.

Presumably the system is like that to prevent that old student trick of bringing up the gear on the pan ?

Surprised the emergency brake wasn`t used but to be honest if I was in that situation I wouldn`t have the presence of mind to go for it !!

Observations ?

Yes - regarding the recommendation that students should practise the use of the emergency brakes - that is included in the normal taxy checks for some aircraft and it serves the dual purpose of checking that they work and reminding aircrew how to use them. A good recommendation I believe.

Does anybody have any info on the latest L39 that went down near Duxford on the weekend 02Aug03? News reports give no more info other than the pilot of the single seat (sic) jet was OK. Good to hear !! :ok:

Apparent engine failure after take-off at circa 1000 feet according to reports: without wishing to pre-empt the AAIB it seems to have been well handled on the face of it, with the pilot putting it safely into a field substantially intact and walking away. For more details see the thread in the History & Nostalgia section
