BA revamps European, Caribbean network
Maria Wagland, London (10Jul03, 11:36 GMT, 262 words)

Oneworld alliance member British Airways (BA) is cutting a number of unprofitable services this winter, but overall capacity for the period will rise almost 4% as a result of new services and additional frequencies

BA is suspending flights from London Gatwick to Bremen and Brussels from 1 September, followed by its Dusseldorf service from 1 October. Flights to Zagreb, Croatia, and San Diego from London Heathrow will also be suspended before the end of October.

The carrier though is expanding its network from 26 October. It is adding a new daily service linking Gatwick with Turin, increased to twice-daily from December. The airline will also link Manchester with Copenhagen twice daily, and is switching its Bilbao service from Heathrow to Gatwick.

Additionally from April 2004, BA will launch Dubrovnik, Croatia twice daily.

BA will also boost Caribbean routes this winter; upping Antigua flights from seven to 10 flights a week and Barbados from eight to 10 weekly flights.

Airline director of marketing and commercial development Martin George says: “These announcements continue our strategy of focusing on commercially viable routes and suspending those services which don’t make a financial contribution to our business.”

The new services will increase capacity across the network by 3-4% compared to the 2002/3 winter schedule.

In preparation for the opening of the new Terminal 5 at Heathrow in 2008, BA is switching some of its flights between terminals to, “make better use of the existing facilities”. It will move its Johannesburg and Tokyo flights from Terminal 4 to Terminal 1 from 26 October to better position connecting passengers.

Then how does Dubrovnik fit?! I may well be proved to be very wrong, but it doesn't sound like a major destination to me.

How does switching now from T4 to T1 help to prepare for T5 operations ? Would this be 'spin' to shift some services away from congested T4 ?

As for Dubrovnik, it wouldn't have been my first choice for a new service, but the coastal regions of former Yugoslavia (present-day Bosnia and Croatia) are quite economically active now and are difficult to reach by land from Zagreb or Belgrade. There is also some tourism potential, long-weekenders etc.

I don't think this is spin for moving services away from T4, as BA are planning to move many European services (Which of course have a much higher frequency than long hauls) to T4.
These include Nice, Zurich, Brussels, Geneva, and Venice.
By the looks of things this is increasing the number of movments on the South side!

Isn't transfer of more frequent European services from T1 to T4 going to cause even more ground movement taxi-ing delays with the need to cross 09R/27L more often than the gains saved by some long-haul services going in the opposite direction ?

And, also, won't there be more confusion in the passenger's mind ? Basically, most people could get along with the fact that domestic/European services ran from T1 (minus Paris, Amsterdam and Moscow), while long-haul services went from T4.

Paris, Amsterdam, Athens and Moscow causes havoc at the moment. Adding 5 or so more destinations to that list is going to be difficult for even the airlines to remember let alone the pax.
I don't really see what BA are playing at, but I don't think they are so short sighted so as not to notice T4's escalating problems.

Hmm, maybe it was Vienna then. However these services are unconfirmed, and the latest rumour is that they aren't actualy moving until 2004 now.
