A French helicopter carrying 12 passengers crashed on Friday some 200km east of the Malian capital Bamako, a military official in Mali said.
No information was available at 18:30 about the fate of the passengers, who included a French military attache, the official said.
The helicopter had been overflying Malian territory on a reconnaissance mission, ahead of a planned visit to the country by French President Jacques Chirac in October, he said.
