Right, I just received this little piece of spam from US Airways. Apparently there's a new meal service being launched in the US - details below. Are they really saying that a meal cost $10 and was included in the price of a coach ticket prior to meals being pulled? I doubt it, in any case it appears that deciding to have airline food and paying explicitly for it versus purchasing a lovely dollop of fast food at the airport prior to departure is now an option. Ooer, I wonder if they'll prevent you from eating unless it was bought on board??? Aircrew, any comments?

Dear OZZY,

After several months of testing in select markets with a positive response from customers, US Airways will introduce In-flight Cafe service on most flights within the U.S. that are 700 miles or more, effective July 1, 2003.

When traveling in Coach Class, you now will have the opportunity to purchase restaurant-quality meals on board many flights that previously did not offer any meal service. In-flight Cafe will replace the complimentary snack and full meal service formerly provided on select flights. Special meals (such as vegetarian) will no longer be available in Coach Class. US Airways will continue to offer its complimentary beverage service on all flights.

First Class customers will continue to receive complimentary meals and be able to request special meals in advance. In addition, the complimentary meal service currently available on board transatlantic and Caribbean flights will continue to be offered to all US Airways customers.

US Airways is currently featuring gourmet deli-style meals from Einstein Bros. Breakfast, available for US$7.00, includes a blueberry-walnut muffin, a fresh honeydew and mandarin orange salad, yogurt with granola on the side, and a bottle of spring water.

Two choices are available for lunch and dinner, both for US$10.00:

- The Chicken Caesar Sandwich meal, comprised of roasted rosemary chicken breast, shredded Asiago cheese, and romaine lettuce on a rustica hoagie roll with a side of Caesar sun-dried tomato dressing, fresh seasonal fruit, Kettle chips, a chocolate chunk cookie and spring water.

- The Bros Bistro Chicken Salad, comprised of roasted chicken strips on fresh romaine and spring lettuces, feta cheese, dried cherries and butter-toffee glazed walnuts with raspberry vinaigrette dressing on the side, Asiago herb flat bread, a chocolate chunk cookie and spring water.

These selections will remain in place through July 15, after which new menus will be introduced on the 16th of each month.

In-flight Cafe meals may be purchased on board, initially with cash only, and a receipt will be included with each meal. US Airways Express flights will not offer In-flight Cafe at first; however, the concept will be tested in the fall. More information on In-flight Cafe is available at http://www.usairways.com/inflight_cafe

US Airways' goal is to provide you with the best service - on the ground and in the air. In-flight Cafe is yet another step toward making US Airways your airline of choice today and for many years to come.

Thank you for flying with us.

Sincerely,

Michael Isom

That airline operates in a market in which the customers' financial attitudes (to put it neutrally) are to prefer to save $5 or $7 more on their air fare than to receive a higher level of service. But quite frankly, the higher level of service is wasted on a lot of that market anyway, because when they get it they just bitch about how it isn't better/isn't how it used to be/isn't like what it was like in First Class the last time they got upgraded off a $99 ticket.
