Duo Airways (VB/Birmingham), a British Airways (BA/London Heathrow) franchisee, is planning to start services from Birmingham and Edinburgh to Zurich. :ok:

Good news indeed! DUO have also been rumoured to be considering an Edinburgh-Budapest route, I wonder if they will announce this one soon too?

Will the zurich flight be a DUO route or a BA route?

They are planning a press conference next Tuesday involving the first minister for Scotland I believe to announce all. Hope it doesn't rain!

I am not prepared to ruin the 1st ministers moment of glory, but once the announcement has been made next tuesday (1/7/03) the website will be available with information. Bookings can be made as of the first week in August.

Heard today that they are to loose the franchise at the end of the summer schedule. BACX to take on some of the routes!

I don't think the term loose the franchise is the correct one to use as I believe that the duo team think it would be in there best interest to break away from B.A and have some independence. With regards to the routes, all of the current routes are owned by duo - yes they have chosen to reduce the amount of BHX O/B routes for the winter as they are not profitable, so therefore, BA are welcome to them.

>>I am not prepared to ruin the 1st ministers moment of glory<<

I think that we might have stolen his thunder!:D

It will of course be nice to have this new flight, but it seems a bit OTT to have a press conference with McConnell just to announce one new route - so I was wondering if it might perhaps be a multiple announcement, featuring other services that haven't leaked out here yet!?!? - pure speculation of course - any comments?;)

This is living dangerously I cannot imagine that you can compete using CRJ's on these routes, if they (the routes) were feasible surely LC's would already operate them. Whatever DUO need to be sucessful as the future looks uncertain for many.

Believe me the above listed routes are not fact. The company has done its homework and all will be revealed on Tuesday.

The Sunday Times says the four new EDI services will be to Geneva, Zurich, Oslo and Milan. They are to commence in October.

Excellent news! :D

All great routes, I am sure, and especially so if one of them is Milan! What a feather in the cap! The Glasgow contingent will be biting their lip with that one. Either way, great news. Delighted for Edinburgh if they all come off.

I saw that article too. Great news for Scotland. Well done EDI.

I wonder if it might prompt any reaction from other airlines. Ryanair's competitive instincts might see their almost inevitable Prestwick - Milan route brought forward.

I'd imagine Easyjet might also be unhappy about another airline covering their Swiss destinations. Perhaps they might finally be pushed into improving their dire international links from Scotland.

>>I'd imagine Easyjet might also be unhappy about another airline covering their Swiss destinations. Perhaps they might finally be pushed into improving their dire international links from Scotland.<<

As far as that goes, there was an interesting news release on the easyJet site today. It relates to their submission to the government's UK airport consultation. Regarding Scottish airports they said this:

"The situation is even worse in Scotland where BAA controls the three major airports (Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen), but without even economic regulation to ensure costs are kept at a reasonable level. easyJet is totally committed to providing additional direct flights from Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen to points in continental Europe - but not at any price. To get the best deal for consumers, charges at Edinburgh and Glasgow should be set by the CAA: only this way will we know if the scarce airport capacity in Scotland is being used effectively."

The full release is availablehere (http://www.easyjet.com/EN/news/20030630_01.html)

Germania from Prestwick,

I heard a rumour it could be Snowflake offering services to Copenhagen,Stockholm,Helsinki and Oslo.
Either 2 of these they would operate.

Just looking at their website - snowflake only operate currently from CPH and Stockholm (ARN?). The majority of routes are only operated 2/3/4x weekly. It would seem silly for them to fly to Oslo or Stockholm in direct competition to FR. They appear to have nothing to do with Finland at the moment. As snowflake is an offshoot of SAS, I don't think SAS would want to do over their star alliance partners bmi by competing with their GLA/EDI-CPH flights.

Germania appear to have their hub at TXL, so presumably this would be the destination if they happen to be the airline in question, don't know about a second destination - they don't seem to have another focus airport.

The website is now up and running (www.duo.com ). It is only any information site at the moment but it clarifies the routes and states that bookings will be able to be made from August. I believe that the number of information pages will be increased over the next few weeks.:ok:

Sorry, I think I may have missed something here somewhere?? Are DUO parting ways with British Airways?? Or will these new flights be aswell as the franchise routes?? Or are they still the franchise routes?? If they are still the franchise routes how come you will be able to book direct with duo.com and not just BA.

Thanks

Your restraint in line with the company brief is 5 star mate. Well done. I have watched from afar and deleted a couple of posts, needing to (in the nicest way), bite me tounge.

As Blighty says, the web is up. jmc757, you can answer your own question, with Blighty's link, we can't.

Looking forward to serving the unserved, in a way the LC's could only dream of.
