'Box-cutter' delays Qantas flight
June 25, 2003

A QANTAS flight from Perth to Singapore was delayed after a passenger reportedly was found to have a box-cutter in a seat pocket.

Qantas flight 77 left Perth International Airport at 9pm (WST) last night after a 90-minute delay.

All 233 passengers were removed from the aircraft and re-screened, a Qantas spokeswoman said.

She would not confirm an ABC radio report that a passenger was found to have a box-cutter stowed in a seat.

Passenger safety was not compromised aboard the 767-300 aircraft, the spokeswoman said.

"There was a security issue concerning Qantas flight 77 from Perth to Singapore," she said.

"Routine procedures were followed, including the re-screening of all 233 passengers.

"There was no threat to passengers at any time.

"The plane departed at 9pm Perth time, which was one-and-a-half hours after its scheduled departure time."

Knife scare forces Qantas plane turnaround

A Qantas flight to Singapore has been forced to return to Perth after a passenger found a knife on board.

Flight QF77 landed in Perth from Jakarta last night and was en route to Singapore this morning when a passenger found a box-cutter in the pocket of the seat in front of him.

The passenger alerted the aircraft's crew and the plane was turned around and brought back to Perth Airport this morning.

The aircraft was searched by airport security staff, who found nothing.

Qantas says all 233 passengers went through screening procedures for a second time before the plane was allowed to depart again an hour and a half later.

The Australian Federal Police are at the airport investigating the incident.

Knife on plane may be 'inside job': Anderson

The Federal Transport Minister, John Anderson, says he cannot rule out that a knife found in the seat pocket of a Qantas jet may have been an "inside job".

Investigations are underway after the knife was found on a Qantas flight from Perth yesterday morning.

The flight was delayed for 90 minutes while more than 200 passengers were taken from the plane and re-screened.

Mr Anderson says it is still unclear where the knife originated.

"I would again caution against overreaction," he said.

"Let's see what we can establish and get to the bottom of it as much as we can before we jump to any conclusions about what may now be necessary in terms of further security arrangements."

Do you call it a "box cutter" or a "Stanley knife" in oz?

High time that flight specific code activated tasers are required as standard flightdeck equipment on all airliners. Only a matter of time before a suicide intruder infiltrates a cockpit. Single security doors without barriers are a joke when you consider the easy 2 second access available whenever door is opened.:ooh:

We used to call them Stanley Knives, but sadly another Americanism infiltrates our lingo. Pre 911 I did not even know what a box cutter was!

It was only a couple of days later on the news that I saw one being shown and went "oh, a Stanley Knife!:
