Former SIA chief Lim Chin Beng registers new airline company

Former SIA chief executive Lim Chin Beng has been exposed as the mystery man behind plans to possibly set up a budget airline in Singapore.
A check with the Companies Registry by MediaCorp's TODAY newspaper found that a new company called ValuAir was registered just over two months ago.

Further checks by Channel NewsAsia has found that the new airline has even registered phone numbers at Changi Airport and Temasek Tower in Shenton Way.

One of SIA's founding fathers could soon be its biggest rival.

Mr Lim joined SIA's forerunner Malayan Airlines in 1960 and served on Singapore Airline's board after its inception until 1996.

He was pictured at the delivery of an SIA cargo plane 15 years ago.

Companies Registry records show Mr Lim was first appointed a director of ValuAir Pte Ltd on May 12, along with three others.

It has an authorised capital of S$10 million and its principal activities are said to be "airlines and aircraft chartering with operator".

And the firm's registered office is at Suntec City, although it has phone numbers elsewhere.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore told Channel NewsAsia it has not yet received any application for an airline operators licence.

Mr Lim could not be reached for comment on Friday.

But he comes with plenty of business pedigree.

He is currently non-executive chairman of Singapore Press Holdings, chairman of property firm Ascott Group and was recently chief negotiator of the Singapore-Japan free trade agreement.

News of ValuAir's corporate registration comes just days after Singapore Airlines' new chief executive officer Chew Choon Seng revealed he had formed an executive task force to evaluate the feasibility of setting up its own budget airline to compete with any new rivals on its turf.

But this could prove costly at a time when SIA is bleeding red ink and laying off staff.

And a decision will be made by the end of this year.
