just a question of hours.
i was wondering what sort of hours do the RAAF pilots fly. i heard that the pig crews were as low as 150-200 hours a year. if so how hard is it to remain current fying such low hours. and also what is the average lenght of each sortie. the hornet boys average abut 40 min. do the pig crews fly longer sorties as the aircraft has longer range. also who flys the most hours. herc pilots fish heads ,navy or army? .

teapoo, answers to your questions.

RAAF pilots fly regulation civilian hours, standardised to military format. These equate to 60 minutes of linear earth time.

The average length of a sortie is from take off, to turn around, and back to landing.

It's pretty damn hard to not be current on an aeroplane if you are behind the controls for 200 continuous hours. Bear in mind that this may include missions of varying length, intensity, and strategic importance, and may also include some bullsh1t figures given to the press to throw them off the scent.

Thanks to a special agreement between the USA and AUS governments, Boeing, and General Dynamics, 40 minutes is now treated as being the same period of time regardless of which aircraft is being flown.

Who flies the most hours is determined by a secret formula which is based on log records. The hours are added up, and whoever has the biggest number, is said to have flown the greatest number of hours.

Hope this helps.

150-200 hours annually or up to 5 hours a week in a fighter or similar isn't too bad at all....spare a thought for the poor old Rusky frontline Knucks who are averaging around 15-20 hours annually!

Its not the number of hours, its what you do with them....

Its a damn sight harder to stay proficient at aircraft handling on an airliner when 800hrs are flown in a year but you only waggle the stick once every 2 flights and then for less than 5 minutes total. All that flying adds up to about 10 hours handling.

You shud think tha' sen looky!
