:{ Yes it's true, and I'm told that it landed next to a double-decker bus on the moon that was driven by Elvis, and is still there to this day.

This story has been around a long time and appears to have a ring of truth to it.

After escaping from The Hayes at Swanwick in 1940, Franz von Werra was sitting in a Hurricane at Hucknall, and had persuaded someone to plug in a trolley-acc, when he was arrested.
All he wanted was transport, but I think I am correct in saying that it was test aircraft with a new and relatively secret mark of Merlin.
Another 30 seconds and he would probably have got away with it. As it was, he eventually got back to Germany after jumping a train in Canada, swimming across the border and seeking asylum in Septicland.
