View Full Version : BOEING DROPS 744XL
Boeing has scuttled the launch of the 747-400XL and conceded defeat that Boeing has lost the war for the 'Super Jumbo' to Airbus. Therefore the 747-400 will be the last Boeing 747 variant to be built. Boeing is re-focusing on a mach 0.90 'future airliner' with a range of 9000NM. A sad day indeed for the 747, being the most successful widebody aircraft ever built.

ROFL all you want. You should read the trades in the US where I am (ie in LA). I met a Boeing guy at my hotel in LA from the Long Beach plant that confirmed.

Well that explains it. He works in Long Beach. Soon there won't be a long beach plant.

Judge for yourself from a statement from Boeing.
"Boeing Commercial Airplanes announced that airline customers have indicated that, with continued improvements, the 747-400 family will satisfy the majority of their large airplane needs. Development of the Longer Range 747-400 will continue; the first airplane will be delivered to QANTAS in November 2002. Boeing is also studying additional improvements to the 747-400, and will protect its ability to develop a larger (747X) if and when customers indicate a need.
(ie that no orders were placed for the 747X nor did Boeing get a favourable field response. To date Boeing have 13 744 on order two for Air France if you believe. Therefore the 744X is placed in room 101.
Another statement from Boeing "After extensive conversations with our customers, we are focusing our new product development efforts on a dramatic new airplane that will allow travelers to go where they want to go, when they want to go - directly to their destinations. This exciting new airplane will allow faster, higher, farther flight than any current airplane. It also will be quieter on takeoff and landing. The new design complements our existing product line, which remains in high demand."

Am I missing the point here or is this old news, or have Boeing cancelled something else? I thought the stretched 747 was cancelled a while ago?

The decision was made by Boeing on the 31st March so you are right this is somewhat old news. To be fair I have not been in the loop for a couple of months due to extensive travel.
