I put this in Jet Blast but I figured there'd be some model makers here as well...

Why do they make models in 1:72 and 1:76? Why not just pick one and stick with it?

Also, is 1:72 OO and 1:76 HO?

I've been collecting the Corgi Blackpool tram models and they're all 1:76, whereas all the Airfix kits I used to make were 1:72

Blame the railway modellers.
HO 1/87 3.5 mm to one foot (305 mm)
OO 1/76 4 mm to the foot

I believe that 1/72 was the scale selected as a standard for aircraft recognition models during WW2.

I’m off to put on my cagoule and fill my tartan thermos.

When I was a lad I would spend all my pocket money on KeilKraft 1/72 kits of aircraft, (balsa wood and paper etc). Never did find out why it was 1/72 scale but what Molesworth Hold says makes sense.

Can't get KeilKraft 1/72 down here in Australia, do they still produce them in the UK? If not KK then perhaps someone else?

Cheers BE.

Aircraft and helicopter models in the USA are available in 1:72, 1:48, 1:32 with commercial models being available in 1:200 and 1:100 and if the models are made for Douglas they are available in 1:164. Some models made for Boeing are in 1:150 scale. Other models are available in 1:40 and some are available in 1:35 to be compatible with armor models, which are mainly in 1:35. Some oddball models are in 1:15 and 1:30 depending on the size of the actual aircraft while others are available in 1:24, 1:36, 1:60.

I have a custom made P-51 and a BF 109 and they are in 1:16 scale.

Thanks everyone. :ok:

Wow, this is WAY more complicated than I thought. I just thought 1:72 would make a six foot high toy soldier an inch tall and still give you something big enough to play with. I've made some Monogram 1:48 scale which I thought were good kits. I liked the detail in the Matchbox 1:72 kits as well. (How did I ever have the time to do all that?)

In England, I also saw a few 1:144 scale models, though it was really limited to ships and larger aircraft.

I remember Kiel Kraft too, but I never did much balsa.

Anyway, thanks again...it's really clear now :=

Any idea where I might get some 1/72, or near to that, scale models in balsa, paper etc. sent to me if I pay shipping etc?

I would place a decent order. Any help appreciated.

regards,

BE.

If you have access to the Google search engine dial in Balsa airplane models. I can’t guarantee that you will find 1:72 scale models but there is a heap of information available.

I forgot about 1:144 scale models. They are mainly for commercial aircraft. There are some models available in 1:350, 1:400 and 1:600 and some even smaller.

Blue Eagle,

I think the Keil Kraft kits you remember were larger than 1/72 - typical wingspan for the model was about 20 - 22". As Lo says, a search on balsa will turn up a number of kit suppliers. In UK www.samsmodels.demon.co.uk/ is a comprehensive supplier. Also, there are lots of plans at www.theplanpage.com and www.ualberta.ca/~khorne/

IT
