Oooh he would have cringed to see you call him Lucky Lindy - he did not like the nickname, on the basis that he did not think he was lucky at all. And I tend to agree with him. He thought out the flight in enormous, logical detail and was as prepared as it was possible to be.

True - but it is what the media came up with, and it stuck.
Of course, there is always an element of luck in an undertaking like this.
