Help! Burned CD not being recognised

hi all! I copied data from my old hard drive onto a CD using adaptec directcd on windows millenium edition. it copied fine and that old computer recognied the files on the CD whenever i loaded it, however, on my new PC (windows XP) when i try to load the CD to copy the files across, it doesnt recognise it as a cd with data on it and thinks its a blank one. I used all the correct options on the adaptec software which should allow the cd to be read on normal CD drives so im at a loss :*. any ideas? :confused:

Two possibilities - firstly, have you made sure that the "burnt" file(s) was successfully "closed" when created? Sometimes a CD reader will not be able to "see" a file which is still "open".

Secondly, there may be a compatibility problem. Can you read any "burnt" discs on your drive? Try and create a CD on a friend's CDW and see if you can read that. Either way, contact the manufacturer of your drive to see if there are any known problems.

Further to newswatcher, I remember when I used to use ezcd/direct cd the pc that you were trying to read it from had to have a udf reader installed, if it didn't have ezcd/direct cd on it that is. What version of ezcd/direct cd are you using, if it is version 4 then this may be your problem, it may well need updating. Most info can be found on Roxio website (http://www.roxio.com).

I used to swear by ezcd, now I use nero, much better and easy to use for CD/DVD writing.

I've had that problem too. Is it a CD/R or a RW? I couldn't read CD/RW on another computer but could on my own. UDF reader sorted it I think, but have you tried reading it in the RW drive ie the one that wrote it? or just in the ROM drive?

Lastly, if it's a new install, you may need to install adaptec again on the new computer before you can read the old stuff.

I used to use adaptec/directcd and found it a right royal b....d to re-install. You only have to miss one registry entry on the unistall and it will tell you you already have a copy and won't re-install. Along with other problems such as you are having, I eventually went to Nero and haven't had a problem since.
But that doesn't solve your problem. I did come across a site that gave information on how to retrieve data off CD's that had died. I could try and hunt it down again and post them if that would help?.

i gave up in the end and took the pc's round to my far more computer literate mate who networked them and transferred my stuff that way cos i needed it done sharpish (off to NZ tonight). Ill look into the nero software for the future though.

A quick (well slow) "fix" is to try recording at a slower speed. I've occasionally had CDs recorded at 20x or 16x that wouldn't read on another system. Tried re-cutting at 8x and it read fine on the other system. Perhaps the two drives were right at the opposite ends of the tolerance band...

I burn mine at 48x, and have never had problems on any format disc (video, music, data), on any machine other than mine.
