View Full Version : Kidney Transplant

The scenario is a live related donor transplant. The donor is an airline pilot, the recipient wants to be an airline pilot.

Would the donor be able to keep his class 1 if he donated a kidney?

Would the recipient be able to get a class 1 after a transplant?

Any ideas?

AVCP - this is not a medically qualified opinion, but the following extract from JAR FCL3 01.06.02 Appendix-7 Amendment 2 appears as follows:

Appendix 6 to Subparts B and C
Urinary system (See JAR–FCL 3.185 and 3.305)
<irrelevant bits snipped>
3 Major urological surgery is disqualifying for a minimum of three months. The AMS may consider certification if the applicant is completely asymptomatic and there is a minimal risk of secondary complication or recurrence.
4 Renal transplantation or total cystectomy is not acceptable for initial Class 1 certification. Recertification may be considered by the AMS in the case of:
(a) renal transplant which is fully compensated and tolerated with minimal immuno-suppressive therapy after at least 12 months;
<more irrelevant bits snipped>

I would read that as the donor having his/her medical suspended for a minimum of 3 months and the recipient will be totally disqualified from being granted an initial Class 1.

Obviously, this is something that only the medical people at the Belgrano will be able to give categoric statements on.
