Sorry Chaps, I feel a bit of a fraud given so many hot threads at the moment but I have a pressing need for a copy of the 6 Sqn crest in reasonable detail - my web searches have turned up very little. Can anyone help? A link or personal e-mail would be top banana.

Try the RAF offical web site, there is a crest on the 6 Sqn page. http://www.raf.mod.uk/squadrons/h6.html

Thanks SB - I had seen that already as well as all the other sites that came up with Google but I need to see the Eagle and Snake is greater detail. Some images seem to have the snake in the Eagles claws whereas others show the Eagle clutching it in it's beak - I can't tell. I feel a bit geeky but I have a good reason to find out - honest!

... Attach some feathers to a sturdy can-opener taken from the cutlery drawer, photograph it and manipulate on the PC.

Now you have a flying can-opener for half the cost!:)

In November 1937, the Squadron Badge was registered and confirmed the continuing links with the Army. The badge represents a falcon with spread wings clutching a snake in the shape of a figure 6. The motto "Oculi Excercitus" translates as "The eyes of the Army." Up to this time the badge consisted of a black falcon perched inside the loop of a numeral six. The Inspector of RAF Badges refused to allow the use of a numeral so a snakes head and tail were added to the figure "6" as a compromise.
