In order to keep weight down. Do manafacturers yet make geaboxes from non metal materials?
Do operators ever tell the pilots to lose weight?

I believe quite a few of the US EMS operators have a pilot weight limit. Let us know how you get on with your first non-metal MGB;)

Non metal gearbox you say? What will the chip detector pick up then?

Not sure about the gearbox, but pretty much every other part of the powertrain (well, apart from the engine) has been made from composites by now. Just look closely at an EH101 if you get the chance, or just compare it's ZFW to that of a Sea-King.

It has been known for pilots in all classes of aircraft to be told to lose some weight, but largely most operators elect to ignore the fact that most helicopter seats are only stressed for 170 or 190lb occupant weight under crash loads.

Comanche has a composite main gear box in its production configuration. The team has done much work and it really does work, saving lots of weight, and allowing great rigidity where needed. The big issues to deal with are temperature and oil impregnation, I think.

Two cheeky replies from Canada.
One lot of good sense from Ghengis and another from Nick.
That cold weather must have got to them Canadians!
