Just wondering why an RAF VC10 did an approach into Landvetter/Gothenburg today, 28th March 2003? It didn't land, just did the app and departed. A helo did the same sort of thing. Suggestions?

Because not all training is carried out in the simulator!

Whilst traing a crew to fly on route, rather than flying from A to B, you can increase traing value by making approaches to intermediate airports. Hence the VC10 not stopping in Gothenberg/Landvetter.

Airports charge more for touchdowns and most of the effort is expended in the approach and missed approach, that is why most military aircraft making training approaches to civil airports do not touch down, as well as being a fatigue saving measure. Also you can save time by not landing taxying and taking off again. Hence why the VC10 did not land.

There is another explanation. They were meant to go to Gothenberg/Save and realised their error at the last moment. Happened before.

If you're not clever enough to spot the correct answer Lump then don't whinge about it!
