NAVY HELICOPTERS CRASH

Seven crew members are missing, feared dead, after two Royal Navy Sea King Airborne Early Warning helicopters collided in mid-air over international waters in the Gulf today.


British forces spokesman Group Captain Al Lockwood told Sky News the helicopters hit each other and did not crash as a result of enemy activity.

"It happened in the early hours," he said. "A search is underway for the missing crew.

"A total of seven people were on board and no survivors have been found as yet," he said.

"But we are doing our utmost to establish very, very quickly what the implications could be and what caused the accident itself."

He added: "The most important thing at this moment is with notifying next of kin of the casualties."

The exact location of the crash has not been disclosed.

Eight British soldiers and four US marines were killed in a helicopter crash in Kuwait on Friday.

I would like to post my sincere condolences to the families of the six Royal Navy and one US Navy aircrew tragically killed in the NAG this morning. Also my thoughts are with the squadron mates back at Culdrose and the crew of the Ark still out there fighting the war. Truely a sad day for the RN.

Such a sad day the FAA and the Royal Navy have not had for many years. The baggers are such a tight nit community this will be so hard to take. It was a pleasure serving with all at 849 during my time as 801 Freddie and words cannot express the sadness I feel at the passing of friends and former ship mates.

Two days in a row I've been woken by the news of UK losses in the Gulf and have carried on the day with a heavy heart. Having flown with 849 as a holdover and, most lately, as a temporary addition to the crew, words cannot properly express my sadness at the loss of 7 members of the FAA community.

As a Junglie, the loss of 8 Royal Marines yesterday was equally saddening and led to a very quiet and sombre day.

RIP guys, your professionalism and dedication will not be forgotten. I hope that other PPRuNers, particularly current or former members of the FAA or RM will find the opportunity to join me in raising a glass to you tonight.

Was just wondering if anyone had spied it on a newspaper site or other official outlet and could direct me. I had looked but couldn't find anything. Still the case it seems. The American Marine on board was named in an American casualties story yesterday.

There is one more name in Tuesday's Telegraph (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=%2Fnews%2F2003%2F03%2F25%2Fnbrits225.xml). Great shock as I went through AFT with him at Culdrose. He was quiet and unassuming, and a great and amusing person to be with. One of the most pleasant people I have ever known, I could never imagine him wishing anyone harm. My heart goes out to his family and girlfriend, and all the loved ones of the other crew. I hope they all felt they were doing something important for the Iraqi people and the world, and their families can take some comfort from this.

If anyone knows who the final two FAA are and feels able to email them to me I would appreciate it - I failed AFT and left the Navy so have no way of finding out about friends until I see them in the papers.
