Crab sticks

I do hate to be an ignorant fool (especially as it happens so often), but I really must know why the good men and women of the RAF are known by the rather unflattering name of the "crabs". I have no doubt that an endless string of airheads have asked exactly the same question, so I apologise for asking it again, but I couldn't find it in past posts (and my computer was becoming touchy because I was asking so much of it).
Many thanks to anyone who responds as I am aware far more pressing matters are being talked about.
