You'll notice how they call "evacuation" what is obviously a deplane. You can see pax on the stairs leaving the aircraft :rolleyes:

In a situation like this the pax must get quite worried. Do the cabin crew or pilot make any announcements of what has happened and what steps they are taking to fix the problem? ie would they say...we are going to circle the airport to dump fuel before we land??? or would it be kept hush hush while they are onboard as it is the best to keep them calm??

Normal SOP would be for the Captain to advise the passengers that they were going to dump fuel in order to return and land at a reasonable weight. That there was no emergency, just a technical problem that made a return the safest option and that all passengers would be attended to and onward flights arranged with the minimum of delay.

It would be quite a busy time on the flight deck so announcements would be sufficient to calm any passengers fears, be factual and helpful but they would not get a running commentary!

The captain would call the senior CC to the flight deck and keep them fully up to date and informed of what was happening, in this case, since it is not an 'emergency' there would be no need to brief for an evacuation.

NZ134 departed Brisbane today at 1400hrs. This was the Air New Zealand 767 that had to make an emergency landing at Brisbane Airport before Xmas last year. It had one engine that came apart shredding the the Port side wing and parts of the fueselage. It occurred minutes after taking off from Brisbane Airport bound for Auckland. The 767 had to make a landing on one engine.

After being kept in a hanger in Brisbane for a few months lets hope that it arrives home safely :-)
