Help please anyone.

My hard disk, motherboard etc fried and died. I have all my files backed up but overlooked the prog files and system settings.

Got a 'new' PC but I can't get half of my old AVIs and some of the newer MPEGs to play - gives a 'this format is not supported' kind of error message.

Are there any programmes out there which will play these clips? Or a way to persuade Win 98 to recognise them?

Thanks for any help

You could check http://www.windowsupdate.com/ to make sure you have the latest version of Windows Media Player.

There's also the free Video LAN player (http://www.videolan.org/ ) which plays virtually anything.

The video codecs have changed throughout the last years.
Try this tool (www.headbands.com/gspot/) to find out which codecs you are missing.
You'll have to find them for yourself, though...
