In Jakarta:

Just heard on the news a helicopter (looked like a red/white painted robbie) was landing on a hotels rooftop helipad, and was blown off, and crashed into the hotels' pool 20+ floors below.

3 dead :(

may they rest in peace.

more at : ABC News (http://abcnews.go.com/wire/World/ap20030304_265.html)

Hotel Security believed the helicopter had already touched down before a strong gust pushed it over the side.

The helicopter belonged to charter operator PT. Heli Zona.

In this story (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20030304.wpool0304/BNStory/International) in the Globe and Mail, there is a photo.

Looks to me like a Raven II with pop-out floats - note the thin/thick/thin gold stripe on the all-red R.44 - that is the style of the new Raven II stripes (eg. check the graphic on this page (http://www.rotorhub.com/news/0302/robi2.htm) where you can see the Raven II titles with this style stripe)

The same operator had another Robinson accident in January 2001 - see this story (http://www.thejakartapost.com/yesterdaydetail.asp?fileid=20010125.B04)

Jakarta Post(5/3) has the Pilot as ex-Air Force Major Affandi Malik (39).

He graduated from the Military Academy in Magelang in 1986, taking early retirement in 1995, and was working at the transportation ministry's Directorate General of Air Transportation as head of flight personnel deployment. He was a specialist pilot for Sykorsky/twin pac helicopters and was once flew operations in East Timor and Papua.

This story from Xinhua News (http://hoovnews.hoovers.com/fp.asp?layout=query_displaynews&q=HELICOPTER&so=&dc=&ro=&ed=&sd=&s=31&boldtext=HELICOPTER&sym=&doc_id=NR20030305375.17_8af600236cb06bfd) refers to the helicopter "not yet in service" which would fit my Raven II theory above.

The aircraft was an R44 Raven recently repainted in the Raven II colours. It was owned by a Balinese company (Bali Adventure Tours) and has been operated by them from Bali for the past two years with an Australian Pilot. After the Bali bombing, since tourism dropped off, the helicopter was leased to Helizona (Jakarta) and they had operated it for only 2 weeks when the accident happened. The aircraft's callsign was PK-BAT. It was extensively equipped for Night Ops (but never flew at night due to local rules) and had floats and lots of ๓ther'gear too.
Condolences to all family and friends involved!
