question to all the more senior and experienced pilots out there...

I am a fixed wing pilot with some flights as EMS ops. I am very interested in doing Helicopter ops, whether it be EMS or other, but I do not have any contacts in the Chopper world.

Any info re the kind of ops , operators, regions, types flown, pay, rostering, work conditions, career prospects etc etc, would be very much appreciated.

How does chopper flying as career compare to fixed wing at the higher levels such as charter co's, regionals and airlines?

Have got 2400TT fixed wing, 600turbine, 700ME. No chopper license or experience other than one flip on a SAAF Alouette years ago.:yuk: nearly did:D

thanks in advance:} :}

Think you might get more of response if the topic header read "seized wing vs rotary wing":)

But then again you are one of the lets land then stop fraternity:D

I would like a job as a plastic surgeon, specialising in breast enlargement. Anyone got any info or can help me break into this line of work? Only experience I have is watching operations on the 'Health' channel, oh, and i'm very interested in the female anatomy!
:D :D

Surely this is a wind up?

rotorpig...seized wing, thats funny;)

helimut...why should this be a wind-up?I'm asking for advice from the people who are in the chopper industry and flying the line.
The only reason I didnt do chopper instead of fixed wing was the money, its bloody expensive in case you didnt notice.

The co. I am in now, does International SOS medevac flights in fixed wing a/c, we fly to the big airports, little airports, gravel, dirt, sand strips, landed on the beach on the skeleton coast, landed on roads in front of farm houses/ next to herds of cattle/ overturned rental-4x4's, landed in the mountains, uphill, in <300m in a 402C, followed by a 401B....done the ops, like it now interested in choppers....wheres the wind-up in that:*

anybody else :} thanks

Okay, i've edited this post as it obviously upset the initial poster and my professionalism was brought into question etc etc.
What I thought was a slightly humourous reply was taken the wrong way and for that I apologise.
As for my airmanship? Get real! Ask anyone who knows me, about the decisions I make with regard to flying. You might find yourself surprised by your premature impression of me.

mutt...did I say it WOULD be easy? No. Did I say I THOUGHT it would be easy? No.
Did I say it would be cheap? No.

I asked for advice from people in the industry who has first hand experience of doing it. Not a wind-up from you.

You have no idea of the kind of ops we do and the difficulty involved.

No usefull information or advise form you, but plenty of negativity and bad attitude. This was a polite and earnest request for information from one aviator to he's colleagues in the industry. If you dont want to answer my question, then dont. Let somebody else do it.

Could your snide and sarcastic remarks be a reflection of your character and professionalism perhaps? It certainly isnt good airmanship, nor is it a bad reflection on me.

I would still like to hear from other chopper pilots out there, thanks:D

intelligent life at last....I dont think I was quick to judge helimutt at all, the guy's been giving me cr*p with every post . I would however, be most welcoming of being pleasantly surprised by helimutt's professionalism and proficiency as chopper pilot and fellow aviator. Unfortunately I percieved he's posts as not quite as innocent and welcoming as he states they were intended. Be that as it may, I would still welcome any info and advice re heli ops from you, helimutt.

kissmysquirrel...thanks for that, I believe that getting the Chopper CPL would involve less hours with me having sufficient fixed wing time. Would have to write some tech exams etc. But I was referring more to the actual real life ops out there.
