All;

With BWI and DCA already closed and Dulles down to one runway, it's likely to get worse before it get's better. Anywhere between 15 to 24 inches of snow is on the way to New Jersey adn New York with the snow ending on Monday afternoon around 5:00pm All times EST and not GMT.

Be careful flying the next couple of days if you're coming to the N.E United States and be prepared for delays.

Squawk, I sandbagged ya. That's Hall Beach on Baffin Island. I can state it's a good place to be from. Also, there ain't much beach this time of the year.:D

Yeah pigboat, I guess you win this one... I tried my "below the belt" wx station UIII (Irkursk - Siberia) but with -18C it's nice & sunny there...

too bad that CYLT is not reporting...

Is CYUX your typical Canadian nudist beach? ;)

All flights out of EWR, LGA and JFK cancelled. LGA officially closed. Close to 25 inches in newark with 18 inches around LGA and JFK and more to come :*

State of Emergency in NJ...no vehicles other than ploughs, ambulances, police etc allowed on the roads. Add a temperature of 18F and 35mph winds and it all adds up to one thing...a day off work:D

My dad is stuck out in Philadelphia, he went out on a trip there on saturday and was supposed to return tomorrow, however he is not expected back now until the end of the week! As the airport is closed.
BA has 3 crews stuck out in Philadelphia at the moment and 2 747's all loosing a lot of money being stuck on the ground!!!
Thats mother nature for you!!!

Who told you it was 2 inches of snow? I was there - it was an inch, maybe less. What a farce! I wasn't stuck though cos I'm an LR Driver too! It took 4 hours to drive back north that day - a journey that usually takes 5 hours on a good day and when I got back here there was about 5 or 6 inches of snow and everything was working as normal.

Pigboat, Squawk ...

If you're looking for a good met site to check (especially in winter), try KMWN

Right now, it's relatively "good" weather: 180354Z 12024KT 30SM -SG BKN030 OVC070 M11/M19

But some days you can get some seriously eye-opening weather

It's good fun if you can pull it up on ACARS and show it to the other pilot, and say something like "Goodness, our 'destination' weather has certainly changed" ;) :}

(just to make sure they're paying attention, mind ... :D )

Ha! McD now you started something ... ;)

I wonder what the met IDs of the north and south pole are. I remember seeing some south pole approach plates, like Ice Tacan South Pole. Wild!

BWI (http://www.bwiairport.com/cgi-bin/fids/htdocs/fids/fids_cookie_write2.cgi) is starting to resume normal ops ...

I remember listening to the 'news' on Heart FM in London the other week as the newsreader described chaos in the south east as 'temperatures plummeted to -2 degrees Celsius!'

McD

KMWN (aka Mount Washington, NH) was reporting a relatively tropical day in your post.

Last time I looked they had 85 mph winds and a windchill of -79F!

McD
18th Feb 2003, 15:27
Yep, Doors to Automatic, that's just the sort of "eye-opening weather" to which I was referring.

That's why it can be good fun, if the other pilot fails to look at the station identifier :E

Today they're still experiencing the same unusual tropical heat, and it's very possible that the current winds qualify as the lightest ever recorded there ;) but at least the visibility is somewhat normal.

And back to the original subject of this thread:

Even though the heavy snowfalls have departed, and ops are resuming, the northeast US is still getting small amounts of snow:

Aahh - Spring is on the way!

I'm passing through JFK next weekend en route to FLL so I hope the snow's gone!

BTW, McD, let me know if you are over this side of the pond anytime soon as I still owe you a beer from the last Pprune get-together!

Got to agree with Bubbette..started around 15:00 or 16;00 on Sunday and after some flurries today finally settled down. I personally had 27 inches which is now down to "0" inches in my driveway albeit i now have a severely aching back.

On the negative side, they finally plowed the streets today and i have the equivalent of a 2-story building in my front yard right now...

Time to shovel the driveway again

Squawk, here's some of the Antarctic spots you were looking for.
McMurdo NZIR
Williams NZWB
South Pole NZPX

The approach plates to CYYT used to contain the following note: Dangerous downdrafts all runways, especially R17 with S wind.
Went in there one pm in a snowstorm, with the wind gusting to 67 kt. Downright interesting.

I had an interesting approach into Alderney, Channel Islands (EGJA) during my IR training in a BE-76 :yuk: (sorry, I don't like this airplane). Winds were gusting up to 50 knots!!! (sshhht, don't tell the CAA!)

My instructor had about 1000 less hours than me, was about 20 years older, and his heart beating twice as fast.

One of my more memorable times ... :(

...and the landing was smooth as silk, too :)

I laughed out loud when I read this on the official NOAA web site. WOW "THE" central weather office for 2 week predictions of the whole US is in someone's house. !!!!!!!???? Talk about ... work from home and no more commuting. :-) I thought nothing stops the weatherman. Because of the snow storm in the North East.
