Hi All

I'm a new member to this group.

I am researching the history of Ballyhalbert Caravan PArk, which
served as a RAF Airfield during the Second World War.

The airfield was opened on 28th June 1941. On 17th July 1945 it was
commissioned as "HMS Corncrake" and transferred to the Royal Navy.
It was decomissioned by the Navy in November 1946 and transferred to
Coastal Command in January 1946.

I have to put on an exhibition in Ballyhalbert Community Hall for
the local Community Group. Any information, photographs etc that
anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Will do - our Beaufighter served operationally at Ballyhalbert during 1942, so I'd be more than happy to make contact with the chap. Could be that he may have additional information regarding her history which I'd love to find out about.

One question, do you have a link to that forum?

When do you need the info for, I know someone who could help he has extensive research on all ww2 airfields in NI. Hope this is not too late. I will pass your details onward.

I flew over Ballyhalbert this morning and what a pleasant place it must have been in its day. I do not know who owns it nowadays, but the runway looked like it would be quite feasable to bring back into service. Of course that was from albeit low height and at ground level the surface may be shot.

If I owned it, it would be a flying club base or at least a glider/para site. Though off course splash landing would be sporty.:O

I noticed comments on Ballyhalbert,-- learnt to drive on the runway years ago, and I will be going to N.I. in a couple of weeks time. I am a Belfast {Comber} sourced Australian. I am also with our Antique Aeroplane Assoc. and have a couple of old aeroplanes including a basket case Short s16 Scion.
Any contact possible with Dh82 or other Antique owners in N.I.?
